This cogent reporting by Judd Legum indicates that JD Vance may be worse than Trump. His reckless, lawless lying and cruelty looks worthy of impeachment. An important officer in Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin lies: "we have intelligence reports that he is involved in human trafficking." And how easily Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt lies--such hardness and lack of intelligence must be how she got hired. It's the time for the Judicial Branch of our government to keep shining the light of courage and truth.

Yes, after admitting the mistake and feeling the heat, they come up with a bunch of accusations...none of which have been documented.

It takes a certain amount of courage and ego strength to admit that you made a mistake and to seek to make amends. There is not a single person who still calls themself "Republican" who has such courage or strength of ego. In the depths of their beings, they're all sniveling little wimps, reduced to such a pathetic existence by those who raised them and would not tolerate anything more.

I don’t understand how Leavitt can sleep at night with the lies, misinformation, and disinformation she says. Is it ignorance or pure deceit?

Good question. Probably a mixture of both.

Huckabee did it too and she was proud of it.

I remember. Now SHE was no dummy. She was "just" crass and crude and nasty.

She trained for the job using tapes of Huckabee Sanders.

There will come a day when this entire corrupt and criminal conspiracy will be brought down and all of the perpetrators, crooks, lames and losers all will be in gaol. The day we have a Trump Tribunal and punish them all will be a proud day indeed for humanity!

This is why they cannot see this regime fail. Violent suppression of peaceful protest, suspension of elections, any and all desperate measures. If democracy is allowed to return, they're all going to jail.

Expand full comment

Agreed. We could have to have a truth and reconciliation commission, then set up the gallows. Give them the Mike Pence treatment.

Considering their love for summary justice for others, I suspect they may not make it to jail.

Ya takin issue with that? Hahahaha! Didn't think so.

The United States can get Abrego Garcia back using the same diplomatic channels with El Salvador that were used to negotiate the prisoner deal in the first place - the administration is just unwilling to do so. They can be forced to negotiate by a lawsuit brought by Abrego Garcia’s family. I am quite sure there are other families of illegally deported immigrants who could join the suit. We need to make a big deal of this injustice.

I don't understand the whole "and we can't get him back" part of the administration's claim. The published arrangement was $6million/300 detainees/per year. The El Salvadoran governement agreed to hold them at the request of this administration. They have no reason to process them, give them hearings, do anything with them other than hold them. If we can't get them back what is to become of them? What happens to them if this administration just stops paying for them to be held? What do they mean they can't get them back? They are (il)legally still in US custody. The El Salvadoran governement is just holding them. What am I missing, here?

It's absurd. If Kristi Noem can go make a propaganda video there she can go back and get him released. And I think there are a few others kidnapped that shouldn't be there either

Trump doesn’t care about US citizens unless they are billionaires feeding his ego and lining his pockets. Even then they are dispensable.

He only cares about billionaires, citizens or not. Anyone and anything to line his pockets.

And yet, Trump was somehow able to get Romania to release Andrew and Tristan Tate, who have been charged there with rape and human trafficking. They also face separate charges in the UK for rape, human trafficking and tax evasion.

And when this poor guy is murdered in the torture prison by members of the gang he fled, then what will Rubio and Vance say? That he got what he deserved? How will Propaganda Barbie spin it? Or worse, will we never know because he has been effectively disappeared?

And it’s the cruelty, that’s their point. To think we were close to tossing Trump behind bars but so many gave him breaks that no one else would get. Just disgusting.

These dipshits could care less about ruining innocent people's lives so the only argument that might (still unlikely) work with them is that this idiocy is going to cost them financially. The U.S. ended up paying $1.6 billion in reparations to Japanese Americans that were placed in internment camps during WWII.

These clowns are going to make that number look like peanuts.

Except they will be long gone. These horrors are being committed in the name of US citizens, us.

Thank you for shining a light on the cruel and unjust treatment of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia by the Trump administration. I hope your words will be the start of returning him to the US and to his family.

Where are faith leaders on this? I would like to see action from the pope, American Friends Service Committee, and others to get Garcia back in the United States and end this sketchy incarceration business in El Salvador.

I agree. Where are the faith leaders. They should be in the front of this fight for human dignity and against the lies and misinformation.

Lawlessness was the goal of the first Trump administration.

Lawlessness IS now the Standard Operational Procedure (SOP) of the Trump/Republican regime!

Thank you for sharing the facts on this. Another indication of lawlessness out of this administration. The names and cases are stacking up—how do we stem this firehose? Would aggregating names and faces make any difference at all?

Expand full comment

The lawlessness compounded by the lies is so galling. Where are the articles of impeachment!

Expand full comment

Much as I admired Cory Booker's filibuster, I wish he had spent that time lighting a fire under his House colleagues to impeach. Even if Mike Johnson had not allowed a floor vote, and even if the Senate never would have provided a two-thirds majority to convict, filing articles of impeachment would be a shot across the bow of future administrations that might not be so securely situated as this one is at the moment.

Trump et al have successfully demonized brown skin Hispanic people; not through any tangible evidence but just the constant drilling into the public consciousness of the killing of one white girl by one brown man. Take a brown-skinned man, add a few tattoos and voila! a criminal not worthy of civil rights.
