Every journalist who can leave CBS will. Every journalist who can't will likely spend as much time as they can subverting and undermining Weiss. She's a toxic internet troll and they know it. At the same time we, the people, will vote with our tuners and tune out CBS, Paramount and every other outlet Ellison is poisoning. Have they learned nothing from the Disney fiasco?
This is an important connection. It bears constant repetition that this the Ellisons at work, and that control of CBS and a critical stake in TikTok by this pair is part of the creeping control of news and social media outlets — the percentage of people who get their “news” from TikTok is depressing — that is a key component in competitive authoritarianism.
Said Bari Weiss in 2024, the “political left… makes war on our common history, our common identity as Americans, and fundamentally, on the goodness of the American project.”
Keep in mind that when Weiss, Trump supporters, and Republicans more generally refer to "our common history, our common identity as Americans" and "the American project," they are referring to white people, particularly white people of their political persuasion.
Her 2023 reference to "hard work, merit, family, and the dignity of the individual" has the same problem. The white wing seems to assume that belief in these things is unique to white Republicans.
True words. The White Wing goes over quite well when served in Whitey's House. And speaking of our "common history" why can't we have what has been considered to be "Black History" taught with everything else as "American History" without separation from the rest.
After all, it all happened here in America and comprises a history shared by us all. Every inhabitant of this possibly-going-to-be-great country should have a place, a space and a voice in our common history!
Amen to that. I was very, very lucky in my high school history teacher. My school offered a two-year history course that covered the state's American history requirement and the rest of the world as well. It's served me very, very well in the decades since. Not for nothing has history been my passion, U.S. and otherwise. (Since my high school years covered the mid to late 1960s, we also had a crash course in American history in the making.)
I like that idea. I had to take "American History and Government, Black Perspective" in college to get that POV. It's also less boring to see different perspectives and I was quite frequently bored in school. You can only see the same thing over and over again so much before you start tuning it out.
Thank you Theresa S. What you say is true. Taking a historical event and framing it from the various participants POV should be a technique used to teach history!
"No corrections were ever made." Well, not by the Free Press anyway but looks like corrections in the historical record are being made right here - not about the numbers but about the skewed reporting. You know, I could publish a newsletter called TRUTH and tell nothing but lies but because of its name some would think that no matter what I printed, because I called it truth, it was. We are taught to believe in things that people like parents and priests tell us. The media was once a place to be trusted as well but when the "public square" opened up to hacks, liars and con men, truth is relative, bendable and quite often, a pile of bullshit with a little sign sticking out of it reading "Pravda."
The debate about 24000 vs 12000 civilians killed or the debate about 30% vs 15% of children starving only serves to distract from the fact that a lot of people are starving and dying. You know that the distraction is working when a lot of people spend a lot of time arguing about the numbers while the problem is going on. Anything other then how to get food to the starving or stopping the killing of civilians is a distraction. When a fire truck pulls up to burning house they don't spend time debating how much of the house has burned they channel all their effort to extinguishing the fire. The Free Press article helps Israel continue to kill and starve by clouding the problem with debate.
For Bari Weiss, the Jews are always the victims and Israel is never wrong. She is a practitioner of identity politics/journalism in the extreme. It's unfortunate for fine journalists still working at CBS that they likely will be unable to maintain both their integrity and their paychecks.
I have an occasionally-updated list of "Rules for Right-wingers," one of which (#3) referred to changing the subject: "Tie up the discussion in piles of minutia to the point where everyone, including your opponent, loses track of the actual issue."
I think that deserves to be its own rule, which will be called "Screw the forest, look at the trees!" The "debate" over the slaughter in Gaza will serve as a clear example.
Katy I think the world stinks like S**T because like Steve Bannon said “ flood the zone”. trump got votes from supporters of Gaza by promising to end the war. He elaborated on his plan to end the war when he met with Benjamin Netanyahu. Turn Gaza into a luxury resort. trump distracted the voters by focusing on when and not how he would end the war. trump has said that if he had been president instead of Biden Russia would not have invaded Ukraine in 2022. I suspect he might be correct in that if he let or helped Russia reinstall a puppet government in Ukraine Russia would not have invaded. To do things well people need to concentrate. trump is the storm that is flooding America. Breaking their concentration, transporting them to trumpland a place of constant confusion.
The demise of CBS did not start recently. It started during the first Trump Regime when Scott Pelley was demoted for calling out Lies Trump told. CBS was compromised then. Its slide into TrumpPravda was the conclusion.
Actually, CBS's decline goes back much farther than that. I quit watching CBS TV network news when they fired Dan Rather for reporting on "Ws" desertion of the end of his military service.
But well before that, there's a 50,000 watt, clear channel AM radio station out of Minneapolis (still exists) which had a wonderful, middle of the road, voice, did statewide coverage, and was permanently on in most kitchens (rural, suburban, and urban), barns, tractors, and pickup trucks across the state. They had the highest market share of any AM radio station in a major market in the US.
Back in the 80's, the CBS network (WCCO had previously been an affiliate), bought out the local owners in order to "improve" the station, fired all the talent, switched the format from news, weather, drive time entertainment, and traffic and farm reports to call-in talk radio, and within a year WCCO was loaded with conservative drivel, NO talent, and unlistenable. Their market share took a massive nose dive, but market share was not the agenda for the new owners. They wanted to get rid of that moderate voice and take the entire state in the "conservative" direction (though they never featured Limbaugh).
As the result, Minnesota Public Radio, News and Information, (primarirly FM with local affiliates across the state) picked up the former WCCO audience and expanded massively, so Minnesota remains one of the better informed state populaces in the nation, despite the owners of CBS trying to weasel newsify the entire state.
Hey, Pravda has actually done enough anti-Putin reporting that its publisher just "fell" from a seventh-story window. More than I can say for most of the U.S. MSM.
Instead of describing media outlets as embracing right-wing ideology let’s just call it collusion. They are colluding with the regime and positioning themselves to complete with Fox News who propelled it to power.
We wouldn’t be in this mess in the United States if the media weren’t complicit. Does the media realize that once there is a totalitarian state, the media will be obsolete, and expendable – both the organizations and the people in them in?
The largest national outlets are all owned by billionaire administration collaborators. They're not worried about being obsolete because fascism's appetite for propaganda is bottomless and because the regime will ensure that the billionaires continue to get fed.
That is true, but, as we see with Putin, if we go full totalitarian, each and every one of those oligarchs is just one comment that the Trumpies don't like on any of the media they own and they, too, will be discovering that they can't fly (by "falling" off a balcony, "falling" out of window, or by their private jet having a little high altitude, decompression accident).
WaPo’s attempt to grow a conservative audience is failing. The comments remain 95% liberal. All that’s happening is that people are canceling their subscriptions. No new conservatives are arriving.
CBS will fail too. MAGA wants Fox News. Are they going to go that far?
Whether or not CBS News makes a profit as a MAGA mouthpiece is immaterial to the fascist billionaires who will own it. The mouthpiece is more important to them than the next quarterly earnings statement.
That is classic long term thinking but these guys exist in an environment populated by short term thinkers. These are the dummies that would kill the goose to get ALL of the eggs sooner!
They won't realize what they've done until it's way too late. Then they'll look to deflect blame. "Well, someone should have told me" they'll wail. "I didn't know she was 13!"
It is becoming more and more common. I receive more information from Judd than I do any other news site. It is the best $50 I spend. Since Paramount has purchased the editor of CBS News perhaps the New York Times should contract with Judd if only to report the slow descent of CBS News into “Fox for liberals”
If they try that they’ll lose their existing viewers and slowly go broke (like WaPo—Bezos’ attempt to attract a right wing audience is failing, but the old liberal audience are leaving).
I wonder what would happen if a group of journalists and computer whizzes were to use current technology to create a 30-60 minute, accurate, new podcast program with the news delivered by some combination of Huntley and Brinkley, a younger looking Dan Rather (with permission), etc. I suspect such a show would gain a massive audience. If they were based off shore, they could even tell the full and honest Truth about the Trump regime without fear or repercussions.
Yeah, Imma dump Paramount plus as soon as I figure it out.
Judd gave me the information and strength to dump the only social media I was ever on: Facebook. I felt to Facebook like I felt to cigarettes - hated them couldn't quit them. Finally, that inner strength that says "I want to live (smoke-free and) bullshit-free" kicked in and Judd's reporting was right there holding my inner self's hand. I jumped and I have never for a second missed fb or regretted leaving it. As for smoking, I'm at the age where my friends are dying from smoke related issues, losing ten years of their life - just like they told us it would 50 years ago.
I had a double lung transplant on 02/22/2022 due to a severe case of COPD from 42+ years of smoking em when the smoking lamp was lit. I feel ya on that and on FB. I gave them up in 2014 and never looked back.
She's actually too brainy for most Trumpers. Her pseudo-intellectual output is aimed squarely at the 20% of GOP voters, most of them in the 25-35 age bracket, who consider themselves moderates.
I've already adjusted my news feed to exclude CBS which in my view, joins Fox, Sinclair etc as Right-wing nut jobs as far as news and information goes. I can hear Cronkite spinning in his grave now
That said, I would like everyone in America, everyone who believes that Liar, Fraud, Con, Grifter, Racist, Fascist, Law Breaker, Scumbag, Friend-of-Pedophiles, America’s Disgrace Trump must be removed from the White House, commit to shutting down the US economy for five days straight!
No purchases for five days straight!
Let’s come up with a starting date and get it done!
Alternate title for today's piece: "Popular Information reads The Free Press so you don't have to." I, for one, appreciate their sacrifice. 🫡
Lies, lies and damned lies,
Led in print by Bari Weiss.
Make mistakes and do much less
Gets you hired by CBS.
It's because she provides an intellectual veneer to conservative propaganda.
Even using a stylish shade from Sephora, it's still just putting lipstick on a pig.
Or, to quote Gone With the Wind and Mammy- she’s just a mule in horse harness.
And vote by not supporting the advertisers, and let them know!

Ooooh! “The white wing” well done. How about the “wealthy wing” too?
White & wealthy… protecting what’s sacred … CBS capitulates -bows down to Project 25, and his eminence in chief.
No kidding. If anyone thought that the corporate media was a "free press" in any sense of the word, I hope they know better now.
"Freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one." - A. J. Liebling, "The New Yorker," May 14, 1960.
(Versions of the sentiment existed at least since the '40s, but his is the one usually cited.)
I like that for sure, but "white wing" rhymes with "right wing" and has a nice ring to it. <g>
True words. The White Wing goes over quite well when served in Whitey's House. And speaking of our "common history" why can't we have what has been considered to be "Black History" taught with everything else as "American History" without separation from the rest.

"Collaborationist media" or "Vichy media" also would work.
Pretty Bari Weiss believes the stuff.

Rupert Murdoch famously once said that US media will consolidate until only two national media companies remain. And that he will own one of them.
There's no way in hell he could've foreseen that Larry Ellison would own the other one.

Superb reporting. Thank you, Judd & Co., for calling out the lies!
CBS will no longer be on in my house. I will miss Sixty Minutes.
Not much to miss nowadays it seems. I'll join you in a moment of silence though. I grew up with Walter Kronkite on the tube.
Huntley and Brinkley
I wonder what would happen if a group of journalists and computer whizzes were to use current technology to create a 30-60 minute, accurate, new podcast program with the news delivered by some combination of Huntley and Brinkley, a younger looking Dan Rather (with permission), etc. I suspect such a show would gain a massive audience. Dan Rather (he’s 93) is writing on Substack. It’s payment optional.

She's actually too brainy for most Trumpers. Her pseudo-intellectual output is aimed squarely at the 20% of GOP voters, most of them in the 25-35 age bracket, who consider themselves moderates.
The FP’s readers are heavily MAGA and threaten to quit if an article criticizes Trump. Some have quit.
What a tragic loss. CBS was still reporting news, not opinions. Guess that's over.
I've already adjusted my news feed to exclude CBS which in my view, joins Fox, Sinclair etc as Right-wing nut jobs as far as news and information goes. I can hear Cronkite spinning in his grave now

Better to target individual businesses for boycott when they pull a Disney. Scalpel over sledgehammer.
The wave of Disney cancellations was very effective.
I hope that these pieces are sent to all media every day.
