Trump DOJ says it needs every state’s full, unredacted voter rolls — except when it doesn’t

This story started with what looked like a simple contradiction.
Trump’s DOJ told a federal judge last year that Kansas voluntarily complied with its demand for sensitive voter data. But Kansas has said it only ever shared publicly available data. So we started pulling that thread.
Then the story got bigger.
For months, DOJ has insisted it needs states’ full, unredacted voter rolls to run the same federal review. But then we took a close look at the communications between DOJ and various states.
Kansas and Montana gave DOJ public voter lists and were said by DOJ to have “cooperated.” Oregon, Colorado, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Utah, Idaho and other states offered similar public records and got sued for refusing to hand over private voter data.
That matters because the department has repeatedly told courts across the country that protected identifiers — including driver’s license and Social Security numbers — are essential to fulfill its nationwide “enforcement.” Yet its own treatment of Kansas and Montana undercuts that argument. Public data were apparently enough when DOJ wanted to declare success, but not enough when it wanted to sue.
The takeaway is not just that Trump’s DOJ has been inconsistent again. It is that the department’s own track record casts doubt on whether its attempted voter data grab is a uniform law-enforcement effort at all — or a campaign in search of a justification.
