Violating the Purcell Principle--whereby courts cannot weigh in on election law immediately before, after or during an election should be reason enough for NC's courts to throw out this GOP attempt to disqualify the votes of tens of thousands of citizens. But honesty and honor are no longer part of the Republican brand, who will lie, cheat and steal to gain power. All so that they can give tax cuts to billionaires. Disgusting.

Thank you Rebecca and Noel for your thorough examination of the North Carolina Supreme Court seat won by Allison Riggs and Jefferson Griffin's attempted heist. We appreciate that you are fighting for the rights of women, especially when they have proven over and over that they deserve the post they have won.

I've been a resident of North Carolina since 1995 and have been a registered voter all this time. I am on the list of challenged voters. This is absolutely absurd. This is how a vote is stolen!

I also am a NC resident. I did not get a post card. The NC State Board of Elections keeps a record of all the elections you have participated in and the party you are registered in. (https://vt.ncsbe.gov/RegLkup/) There is an option for "NCDMV Customer" Mine is marked "no" even though I have had a NC drivers license since moving here in 2003; it's now a "Real" ID and I showed it when I went to vote. Hmm...

Edit to Add: It's also possible to check if your voter registration has ever been removed or denied.

Pretty sure my dad doesn't even know what a QR code is, let alone how to use one. Assuming these voters have smartphones, which is a big assumption to make, the technology infamiliarity factor, alongside the lack of clear instructions/intent, makes these mailers an insidious excuse for public notice. Shameful behavior from a party that knows no apparent shame.

When the thoroughly corrupt NC Supreme Court steals this seat NC voters should mobilize to ensure that no Republican is elected to anything ever again in the state. Tillis is likely toast next year for many reasons, this should seal the deal. The voters also need to target each and every Republican in the legislature and the House for defeat. Election theft cannot go unpunished.

Going after GOP legislators and U.S. House members is a lot easier said than done because so many of them are gerrymandered into seats in very safe GOP districts. Anything's possible, but it will take harder work than that of which the state Democratic Party has so far shown itself capable. It also will take one hell of a lot of luck.

True, but Trump and Musk are generating a lot of luck for the Democrats. Lost benefits and a crashed economy may motivate even some of the MAGAs to vote out the enablers.

I think the current MAGA toxic mix of arrogance, ignorance, overreach and hubris is creating an angry, motivated electorate that they will not see coming.

The delaying tactics Griffin employs are fraud. Shame on those who have given his ridiculous claims any traction. He lost. The people chose. Too arrogant to back away with grace and honor. Clearly not suited to be a judge!

I'm still unclear about how challenging ballots effects other races. If they find these 60000 ballots re not legitimate, does that invalidate their vote across the ticket? Do they also have to pull their vote for the President, and for the Referendums, etc? I mean, how can it count for one item on the ticket (one you wanted them to vote for) and not for another (the one you lost)? I wondered this after the 2020 race when Donald Trump contested the vote and never got a good answer.

it sets a legal precedent that a loser can successfully steal an election with post-election claims that nullify legally cast votes. it would create chaos in elections all over the country.

My question is about other races on the same ticket, not across the country. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

I hope the real cheaters, criminals and scofflaws are studying how to get away with breaking the law right in front of the eyes of law and order - even when you are law and order. This way, they can use these "Trump defense" or Griffin defense" when they stand before a judge. Apparently laws, like the Bible, can be interpreted any which way that fits your desired outcome.

What a bunch of bib babies the Republicans are, whiny and awful.

Republicans: the party of Groping Old Pedophiles. They’re like a bunch of babies— if they don’t get their way, they just fuss and fuss until somebody gives in. It’s time they were shown the exit.

There must be costs associated with all of these recounts - loss of work time as well as real dollars. For a party that claims to want to streamline governing budgets this is another glaring example of their hypocrisy.

Thank you for highlighting this abominable situation, Judd. It is hard to convey how upset many of us in North Carolina have become about the overreach of the GOP-dominated legislature and their allies. We have gone from being a beacon of bipartisan southern progressivism to a benighted backwater.

This, more than any other thing we've witnessed (and I know how hyperbolic that sounds) demonstrates the breadth and depth of their indisputable conviction that they (white men) are entitled to dominate. It's a spectacular display of their deeply held and irrefutable belief in their place in the world as the rightful rulers among us. They will not let democracy and free and fair elections get in their way.
