“Peanuts” is the giveaway. Not a gaffe, a confession. The $43.6 billion isn’t spread across “Americans,” it’s concentrated on the households least able to absorb it: $275 in Alabama, $262 in Utah, the people for whom $331 is the difference between making rent and not.

That’s the cost asymmetry that runs through everything I write. The decision-maker pays nothing. He’s “in no hurry” because the strait staying closed costs him nothing and costs MBS, who pays Kushner tens of millions a year, quite a lot to keep that way. The war’s price is socialized onto the powerless; the war’s patience is purchased by the powerful.

And the precarity isn’t a side effect. A household one bad month from collapse doesn’t organize, doesn’t protest, doesn’t resist. “I don’t think about anybody” isn’t callousness. It’s the operating principle of a system that runs on your anxiety and calls your suffering peanuts.

All true. Plus Trump is in no hurry to end this war as long as Eric and Don Jr’s companies stand to make money off it.

(Not to mention his ability to affect the stock market with pronouncements about the war and then make even more money.)

Nancy's avatar

CORRUPTION in our faces, and still 1/3 of our countrymen and women think he's doing a great job! I find that so hard to wrap my mind around.

Bruce Brittain's avatar

His support comes from three types of voters: (1) Those who worship political power, (2) Those who worship money and (3) Those who are media illiterate or merely stupid.

Tai's avatar

This is 💯. of course Trump does not care. He and his family become even richer with every stock trade and business dealing m.

Ann Sharon's avatar

It makes trumps and the oil / gas guys he promised things to in return for campaign $$ more wealthy. For instance, without the war certain businesses would not welcome Eric & Jr into their organizations to be rewarded with Pentagon contracts for drones. War has always had the ability to make the well positioned wealthier. That was before Polymarket and Kalshi were available for the insiders.

Nancy's avatar

And, surprise surprise, DJT's sons' own a drone factory! The more war, the more drones needed! How about an endless war so there's another endless stream of money coming the sons' way!

Trump has nothing left for this fight. No sense, no attention span and certainly no cards. Just anger and hatred for everything and everyone, including himself. He’s a miserable, pathetic and increasingly dangerous fraud.

And when that boredom gets so bad he wants it all to end, a great big nuclear blast will silence all of his critics. Two blasts would make his enemies tremble. Three blasts will make him king of the world and then he can go play golf without interruption.

How many peanuts can I get for the life of another Iranian child?

Bela's avatar

Can he even play golf anymore?

Linda Slater's avatar

He never could play golf. If he does not cheat so it LOOKS like he is playing golf,

he would not be out there on the course.

Katy Bolger's avatar

I'm not sure he can stand without help any more.

"I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody.”

Gosh, Trump really set this up on a tee for the Dems, didn't he? Even with the full context, it's bad. Iran hasn't been close to building a nuclear weapon by any stretch of the imagination.

The ad is writing itself.

Play it on repeat until election day

Wondering what might happen if I try to pay for a $40 tank of gas (for my economy car) half in cash...

And half in peanuts.

Joking. I already know, considering that this is the deep south. But optimistically, I'd like to point out that I spotted a "I did that!" sticker (Trump version) yesterday, even in the midst of so much overwhelming racist MAGA hate.

Bela's avatar

bragging or a confession?

foofaraw & Chiquita(ARF!)'s avatar

Considering that out of 6 pumps, only one had a remaining sticker (while some had remnants), it's both a surprise...and exactly as anticipated.

Mark H. Jones's avatar

OFFS. He has no intention of ending the war. As long as this war continues, he can manufacture all kinds of drama, manipulate the stock market, and he and his pals cash in. Obviously, he’ll never suffer any legal consequences for this, either. My contempt and disgust for this administration and its enablers continues to grow daily.

Nancy's avatar

Not to mention enriching his drone-owning sons! Forever wars will keep the money flowing into their pockets, so who's in a hurry....

GingerLee's avatar

How many different ways do his followers have to be told he's a self serving monster before they realize they have no food, job, money and soon no roof over their heads before they say "ENOUGH".???? There is a very old saying "Pride goeth before the fall" Are they that proud to be MAGA? And yet, here we are standing by to help pick up the pieces as they spit on us, because we believe in the Constitution. Yes Democrats & Independents live in a very big house and we argue but we do not shite on the Constitution..so you can drop your polls down the drain saying some are "dissatisfied" ..if we were all "satisfied" then we all would have had frontal lobotomies..

Ann Sharon's avatar

I don’t get your fury over poll the ‘dissatisfied’. First of all, I don’t believe polling was mentioned in the article. And 2nd, Who is speaking to these followers to inform them of anything like a different way forward? Analysis after the election showed that those who consumed the least news or avoided consuming news were the most likely to vote for trump. Voters who are frustrated complain about them & call them names.

As for Independents in 2024 they were almost evenly split. 48% voted for trump just as 48% of Latinos did. To prepare for the upcoming elections it is important that 70% of Independents now do not approve of the results. Latinos began this term with 93% approving of trump. TX redistricting was devised with that in mind. Now it has dropped to 66%. Non-Hispanic trump voter approval was at 95% and has dropped to 79%.

These are numbers that move elections. I wish instead of locking in on the dedicated followers that we could turn our energy & attention to harnessing the “dissatisfaction”of those who are not dedicated and are falling away. Otherwise the pendulum could swing back.

All of trump's business failed because he was incompetent. His presidency is failing for the same reason. He was on the tv show The Apprentice, he should have been on the tv show The Biggest Loser.

Actually, the Iran war has nothing to do with nuclear weapons other than the tyrump's lying about it. The only thing Iran having a nuclear weapon would do is to restrain Israel. This war should itself have a restraining effect on Israel. There will be no peace in the middle east without fair treatment for Palestine and its people.

Nancy's avatar

Clearly, DJT wants to support his buddy in Israel, whatever his plans may be. DJT is at his service.

But, Judd, how can we gather all the words and actions that tell us and show us that the Queens borough real estate mob boss really is the personification of a sociopath? That he leads an administration of sycophantic clowns with blow torches? That Republicans (and John Fetterman) are self empretzeling masters at cranial-rectal inversions? How can we possibly gather enough info about his corruption and callousness and chaos when he is so smart in the ways of the force and such a master at subtlety?

Bela's avatar

We already have enough information.

Adam's avatar

Uh, I dunno. Ouija boards? Oh! Oh! Oh! I know! A scrying glass?

Adam's avatar

Hahahaha! Yeah. That'll get to the truth like nothing anybody ever saw!

Katy Bolger's avatar

We are paying but who is profiting? That "extra" money I pay for the gas tank is going into someone's pocket. What big "friend" of Twump's is getting rich? That's part two of this story and an important part because I am already angry at the administration and disgusted by Pete Hogsbreath, et all. But I wanna know, besides the shadowy bettors on polymarket who will bet on the outcome of your child's cancer operation, who is profiting from rising oil prices?

Nancy's avatar

Oil companies that line the Trump family coffers. And don't forget that DJT's sons are part owners of drone factory. No war, no need for lots of drones; so follow the money.

Neal Stiffelman's avatar

Imagine the cowardly, depraved indifference that GOP Senators must hold, letting this all drag the world down just to keep fatfuck from criticizing them.

Trump said that high gas prices amounted to “peanuts.” But according to The Iran War Energy Cost Tracker at Brown University, the Iran War has caused Americans to spend an additional $43.6 billion on fuel costs so far. — 14.5B lbs of 🥜 is a lot …google verified … today going step further, Trump pointed out this is good for U.S. peanut farmers, and he was buying a significant stake in Skippy. American investment opportunities were at an all time high!

I thought the Surging Household Inflation Tracker (SHIT) would be an appropriate acronym for this Trump inflation tracker :)

Adam's avatar

It is! Mwah! (that was a chef's kiss btw)

Therese S.'s avatar

The worst part is that you get hit whether you buy gas or not. So people too poor to own a car are also paying the price in higher cost of everything they pay for. Even food, and for most people, even if you have a home vegetable garden.
