When Congress passed legislation mandating paid sick leave during the pandemic, it exempted 80% of American workers. Notably, the requirement does not apply to any business with more than 500 employees. That means, with the lockdown still in place across much of the country, many "essential workers" have to choose between coming to work sick and receiving a paycheck.
It's called a liability shield, and aptly so, because it not only protects these companies from legal repercussions, but it deflects it elsewhere: on employees, on customers, and on the first responders and medical workers who will be tasked with their care. The Democrats need to fight this tooth and nail, and top Democratic leadership, such as it is, needs to be mouthpieces for legislation like Baldwin's and Duckworth's.
