This week, New York City announced a historic $131.5 million enforcement action against food delivery app DoorDash for underpaying or delaying payments to workers.
Shaking my head at DoorDash trying to spin this as corporate responsibility when the bulk of the issue is not technical errors that led to missing or late pay, but intentional calculations of on-call time. It's not an aberration but rather part of a pattern of behavior.
It seems that the modern day business plan is to make more money by screwing over their employees and the public in general. They appear to believe that they will never get caught. What they have done is trash their reputation. I will never use DoorDash again. And good luck hiring anyone now that the word is out about yet another thoroughly dishonest company.

Now that Wilber Peres a DoorDash worker was shot by ICE while making a delivery, will DoorDash CEO Tony Xu Pay Wilber Perez the benefits he is entitled to? Check this map for clues...

I mean in the suburbs sometimes that might be a hike but in NYC, there is food on every corner and at least a few places on the walk from the subway. And let them know you are boycotting! Unless you agree with corporations ripping workers off and using the courts to do it. Or...laziness. Either way, not boycotting is tacit complicity.
But they refuse to pay for for severe carpal tunnel surgery, and I've NO DOUBT it's because I'm almost 70, and no matter how much they've profited off of my care, they worry about how this $10K+ surgery will be recouped from my premiums, so they've put ridiculous barriers in place that one of my medical professionals didn't even believe when I told him. (A nurse practitioner will be required to AUTHORIZE surgery on a hand she has never examined, even though I'm already an established patient of the orthopedic SURGEON.)
Currently I'm living almost entirely from my soc sec payments, which may not exist if UnitedHealth gets the premiums they want.
In fact, the doctor knew before I did, offering to schedule to surgery soon, but out-of-pocket. They knew the impossibility I was facing from the first day.
And I doubt there's a soul left in America that believes Trump would EVER take the side of a disadvantaged American taxpayer over a billionaire. In fact, I think I can hear him chortling now....
The company used the median payment in their press release to minimize the damage. The average is over $400 per employee. As the city’s press release pointed out, many thousands of workers are owed over $1000.
When commentators criticize the Mamdani administration for ignoring the working class and our quality of life, they ignore actual workers : delivery couriers, nursing home & home health aides, retail & gig workers etc
