Over the last two weeks, Facebook has repeatedly allowed a top Republican Super PAC, American Crossroads, to run dishonest attacks against Democratic Senate candidate Raphael Warnock — in violation of Facebook's own misinformation rules.
Wake up. Facebook is not broken. THIS is exactly how #ZuckerWanker intends to prevent Dems from taking power. He is a greedy fcking scumbag and must be stopped. Break Up Facebook Now.
Widespread individual responsibility to the truth is what's lacking in American democracy at present. PI helps by providing the truth, but that sense of responsibility is a character issue. It's like we're a nation of teenagers, not independent adults. May we continue to mature.
I didn't mean to say that you are a conservative, just that the fallacy of "personal responsibility" as a source of societal problems is a well-known conservative trope and often a rather racist one at that. It's frequently employed against low-income black/brown communities, implying that there is a widespread laziness or unwillingness to attempt to improve ones own circumstances among those groups, when problems are actually more rooted in larger economic/societal trends.
This is not to imply that you are a racist or said anything directly racist yourself at all, just trying to shed some light on this very commonly-cited & misleading justification. The overall level of "widespread individual responsibility" doesn't just decrease over time on its own- when large groups of people lose control of aspects of their life due to the erosion of support structures (education, healthcare, public infrastructure, etc.), they often have little-to-no means of improving their situation regardless of motivation. Thus, it's less "personal responsibility" and more about the decay of institutions we as a society rely on.
Yes, I get what you're saying. My younger sister has schooled me on changing my thinking toward the climate crisis: away from driving a Prius and not buying things wrapped in plastic to going after Exxon and their ilk. I have actively adopted her outlook. It doesn't stop me from longing for a populace of persistent readers and thinkers. Also, I understand the difference between equality and equity, and that you can't pull yourself up by your bootstraps if you have no shoes. Thanks for the reply. It took the sting out of your comment.
Apologies for my lecturing, and thanks for actually listening. Rare to have any kind of nuanced discourse in an internet comments section, even for a publication as excellent as Popular Information :)
I too long for a day when we have a more well-equipped populace of critical thinkers. I think we're actually on the same page. Cheers, and here's to the the pursuit of making things better.
"the company still will not backstop this system with human moderators that could easily identify American Crossroads' duplicative ads. "
Of course they won't. All politics aside, Facebook ist first, foremost and always about money. Human moderators, even when you use companies in India, are costing money, and Facebook will resist spending money unless they are forced to.
I think they really don't give a f*ck about anything else.
Yowling at FB is like screaming into a cavern, the echoes bounce into a din. The real problem here is the comfort with alternate facts and the under educated American public. No discernment between fact and fiction. It seems from reading this, the folk behind FB must not be too far ahead of the public with the exception of the fat cat Republicans at the top. Including Zuck, the man with the vacuous soul.
Super PAC with Karl Rove and Mitch McConnell. Enough to make me taste vomit in my mouth. Campaign finance reform Puuuleaaase!
Jan. 5 looms large. Our Democracy hangs on a thread.
I did my part from VA--made the donations to the two Dems, sent post cards, phone messages. A Huzzah to Stacey Abrams!
Hope you did, too. May the efforts of the small Taters like us count more than those damn FB ads!!
It seems like the comment shared in Workplace is accurate. They dont screen all ads before allowing them to be posted. Its pretty obvious how that could lead to even more problematic actions (subjective filtering of what's allowed to post). For policy it seems to make a lot of sense to make clear to advertisers why their ads got removed and then create escalating harsh enforcement for repeat violations, particularly if they are obviously trying to game the system.
If Facebook is failing to take that last step, that is the real problem that needs to get solved.

Indeed. Facebook is functioning exactly as intended, which is the problem.
I am not terribly surprised by Facebook’s Blatant disregard for truth and justice. I am sharing this on Facebook today. Let’s see what happens.
I just did the same thing. Stay in touch?
Mankind will put an end to Facebook, or Facebook will put an end to Mankind.
Facebook leadership seems to be not only willfully negligent, but incompetent as well. Quite a combination for a service with such power.

...and the conservative "personal responsibility" fallacy echoes on
I'm not a conservative: I'm a former educator who does a lot of research. Look at Legum's source for the name of his newsletter. It's at the bottom.

I’m afraid it’s not likely. We’re witnessing the blooming of the homeschooled generation of the religious right I fear.

Facebook is about ZUCKERBERG's money. And new Dem taxes will not be allowed. Breaking up Facebook WILL NOT BE ALLOWED. #ZuckerWanker must be stopped.

Facebook has proven itself to be as corrupt as Fox News. Endless lies, misinformation, hate mongering, an enemy of science and facts. Enough said.
Facebook never intended to do anything else
