Begich is a liar, a coward and a fraud. Alaskans are going to be devastated by the destruction coming at the hands of Musk, Trump and their MAGA enablers. Alaskans will be looking for someone to blame and Begich, Murkowski and Sullivan are going to be at the top of the list. Especially if Begich keeps talking about how powerless he is to affect the outcome.

He on his own may not be able to affect the outcome. But he is not being honest with his constituents about his adoration of Musk. They need to know that he is supporting the regime and in fact glorying in their work. He is a liar and a fraud.

It takes but one brave person to lead the charge. This coward is not that person.

What's really scary is that when these "blood red" Alaskans go looking for alternatives, they go even deeper into the darkness.

Elections really do have consequences. We vote hoping for benefits, but if we vote for despots, narcissists, cowards and weak, power-hungry idiots, then we only get consequences. We are firmly in the FO phase.

Sorry, but I am not sympathetic to these Alaskans. Alaska is a blood red state and many of those (if not all) that have lost their jobs or will lose their federal jobs voted for this POS and his puppeteer. Karma is a bitch. I am very sorry for the many who did not support Orange Shitler and will be hurt. But there is definitely Schadenfreude now that many of the MAGats are discovering how truly stupid they are.

Well…there is that. But I’m finding it cold comfort. I want their noses rubbed in it so they really learn the lesson. I want all the info that Judd finds to become common knowledge.

While I have sympathy for individuals affected, I mostly agree with you. This is the "find out" part of FAFO eh?

One of my siblings is totally brainwashed. He’s a veteran who has depended on VA benefits and was also a cop after the military. Yet he still cannot accept or admit he is wrong.

Spot on Kate!

The old both sides comment. Similar things happened under Biden, bullies. The rethugs do an excellent job of brainwashing their members. They have these canned responses no matter who is in front of the mic. The GOP is an excellent example of the old Politiboro of the Soviet Union. Everyone has the same comeback for the problems.

Let's make sure Rep. Begich gets the word from everyone what a liar he is, respectfully, of course, and to stop misinforming constituents:

Who makes sure Alaskans understand they are being thrown under the bus by their elected representatives?

Is there an Indivisible Alaska? Are they gaining members? Is Mary Peltola active?

This is what we need to know. Thanks for the reporting but it lacks that one critical "what could be done with that information?" element that would inspire and help galvanize action.

Expand full comment

Myrto, maybe you can answer your own questions, and fairly easily. I just googled Indivisible Alaska, and so can you. This website, Popular Information, is not an activist group, it is journalism.

I hear the frustration in your comment. It is up to us to decide how to use information we get.

I guess opinions just differ on that. I feel like if you're reporting on something, and you stop short of mentioning what could be done to address the situation, that you're being incomplete, and more importantly, spreading disempowerment.

This may come from my work as a doctor: you never describe a medical condition without addressing the question of treatment.

So chalk it up to professional bias. In reading the news, just as in reading for professional reasons, my aim is to figure out how to live my life, not just to know about what's happening out there so I can feel upset, disgusted, and outraged.

Suggesting solutions is not a journalist's job. It introduces a conflict of interest into actual reporting. Suggesting solutions is the job of editorialists. The fact that not many solutions are being offered is that there are damn few sensible and effective solutions right now. Mass demonstrations feel good but have proven ineffective. Sending money to opposition groups is suspect because they are not elected officials and lack the mechanisms of forcing change. Maybe the ACLU, an organization that can bring legal action deserves support (which I do) because in the short term the courts are about the only guardrails to slow this administration. The next time there is an election in 2026, we can once again support qualified candidates for office. Until then, all that most of us can do is wait and hope that nothing truly awful happens as a result of this political/criminal enterprise.

Expand full comment

I can see the problem of conflict of interest.

We are however in uncharted waters and your confidence that 2026 elections will unfold legitimately is not universally shared.

Also, democracy isn't, as it turns out, mainly about waiting passively for the next opportunity to vote.

That's okay, Trump will probably give Alaska back to Russia next week. /snark

Trouble is, is that really so unimaginable, and anyways does "unimaginable" mean "unlikely" anymore?

March 2020 Trump's Treasury quietly BAILED out banks and Wall Street with a total of 3-4 TRILLION DOLLARS 😡

Said market needed "LIQUIDITY." Small paragraph business journal. No notice that Congress ever knew about it. SO...when people keep "going on" about the "DEBT" they don't include the convenient 3-4 TRILLION DOLLARS PASSED TO THE BANKS AND WALL ST WHEN THE MARKET WAS CRASHING.😯😠😡

I totally agree. We need a system to get the news out and as much as I like MSNBC, we need more. As much as I like progressive podcasts, we need more. What is the answer?

Televise Congress?

ALL of it. Every day.

There would be a lot of room to report things if they would STOP reporting Trump. 24/7 for NINE YEARS😠😡🗽🇺🇲🇺🇦

Ms. Lanza, they also harmed the rest of us who do not live in Alaska. Perhaps now is the time to welcome these poor Alaskans into the fold instead of decrying that they "did this to themselves". They are currently well primed to change their minds and parties. Don't you think?

While I have empathy for people who lost jobs, there is only one response: Trump did this. You voted for him. As the nuns told us decades ago in 5th grade, ignorance is no excuse for evil actions.

What are the Dems doing to promote and distribute this important information you keep reporting? Why isn’t it being screamed from the rooftops? We/they need a mechanism that reaches everyone who only watches Fox or MAGA podcasts. This is the most important thing. Get the truth out!

It’s clear that the GOP has rolled over on its back and peed on itself in fear and submission so that is not a source of information. Billboards, signs on buses…I don’t know but we need to do something. Do I sound desperate? Because I am.

I agree that we anticipated this outcome early on but there is no way that I/we deserve this and neither do you!

Not you, myself or any other thinking person who has done their level best to be an informed and responsible citizen deserves this outcome. We do not deserve this shit at all.

The chance to stop this was to not elect him. All of this is and was predictable (the Project 2025 document was out there in print), and while I expected there to be some friction in DOGE gaining access to the apparatus of the government, I felt that Musk was going to get his way.

This is who we are, and where it goes, this is who we will be.

I am seeing lots of "Reagan" republicans who are losing their shit that we are not "the bad guys" in the world. But gnashing their teeth isn't going to undo this.

I am not sure that the passing of Trump will fix this. The Republican Party is full MAGA, and the Democratic Party is ineffective. I do not see either of those things changing in the foreseeable future.

At the moment, I wouldn't be surprised if Russian "election integrity" doesn't descend on our body politic in next year's midterms. I could actually see an increase in the Republican margin in the house.

A LOT of people I used to think were rational are cheering on Musk's assault on the government and the about-face in foreign policy.

That is what is truly scaring the shit out of me.
