Truth no longer underpins journalism. WaPo and NYT are two egregious examples. My journalist (ret.) heart bleeds. 😞

I was going to write something similar- I dropped my subscription to the Times. It’s become pro Trump propaganda. Disappointed to report— so has the Post.

Convicted felon lying thief, Trump & oligarchs Rs cannot get bad headlines, no matter how incoherent Trump is (as he slides down into alleged dementia)

or how fascist R plan - Project 2025 is.

Biden literally couldn’t get a favorable headline for 4 yrs.

Todays headline is the Post was the disastrous Dem 1968 convention - why bring up something that happened 56 yrs ago other then denigrate the Dems?

By the time I read it- comments were “having tech problems”- one couldn’t comment.

LOL. Right.

True. They also mix opinion pieces headlines in with news articles - blurring the lines.

Journalism indeed has truth as an underpinning. Journalism is just no longer what underpins corporate mainstream media.

I cancelled both of those as well but very disappointed to hear the Atlantic was another one rushing to the wrong conclusions. My journalism prof must be very unhappy...

It didn't take long for all those in favor of "capitalist" profiteering to protect unnecessary price inflation. There's a "Bandwagon" many are jumping on. Of course Laryy Kudlow would make this argument, but why WaPo?

Judd, I remember that during the past 2 years that you reported on the corporate heads of food products distribution that CEO's when asked why they increased prices beyond enormous profits and stock buybacks from their profits, they answered, "simply because we can." These men who led oil companies and grocery chains were quoted saying these words. Maybe their words were found when I clicked on an underlined source in your reports. Who can find these bald accusations that sort of proved intentional and shameless price gouging?

The post is pro Trump & Rs - all the time- not even trying to both sides any issue. Their partiality towards Rs is unbelievable.

I am thinking of dropping my sun after the election.

When you've lost Catherine Rampel you know you are on the right track. She has been a reliable mouthpiece for the elites for years. And what do you expect from the editorial board of the WaPo? Not the voice of the working people, that's for sure.

Jeff Bezos opposes price controls? Quelle suprise.

CNN pulled the same trick, 'gouging readers with the rightist propaganda about commie price controls.

I bet there was zero mention/disclosure in the WaPo that their owner has profited greatly thanks to growth in grocery prices?

I don't participate in engagement outrage and visit neither WaPo or NYT but can't help but wonder what the comments section has been like, attacking their horrible and biased coverage, as so perfectly shown here. Is that the only way to fight back?

What if Trump put lipstick on a pig and walked it beside him at rallies and referred to the pig as "my wife?" Would the NYPost put a picture of the pig on the cover of their rag proclaiming "Melania steps out...and is adored by crowd"? And would their readers breathe a collective sigh of relief knowing the marriage of their great leader was solid as a rock?

Stupid is as stupid does. I don't think I really understood what Forrest meant by that until now.

& the times & Post headlines will be "Robust, Blustery Trump"*-- & his beautiful Bride, Melania

* The Times calls Trump "Blustery"-- the Post, "Robust, solid, who meanders at times;"

Meanwhile back at the ranch one of our fav topics in years past in PI has been Kroger the grocery chain. Have you looked at their profits since 2019.

(Hint. You should)

A recent Tik Tok showed to me by my millenial suggests AI is being used to target customers on Click List orders and charge them more than in store shoppers. They promote their Boost program as well and often move items frequently purchased to delivery only which requires Boost.

I remember in 2020 the toilet paper shortage brought a sought after six pack for $9.99 that had been $3.99.

And if I recall correctly good ol Republican Governor of Texas Greg Abbott was holding up Texas border traffic shipments of goods from Mexico. Crackers in particular from the big Nabisco plant located in Mexico were in short supply as I and my friends would locate for each other and meet in parking lots to exchange.

Corporate America represented by the likes of the US Chamber of Commerce has made clear they don't care about anything but profits and investors and neither does the GOP. That 2017 tax cut proved who's in their wallet. Unfortunately so does the MSM who are owned by the 1%. Talking about Soviet era party line reminds me more of MSM news than Kamala trying to stop price gouging.

I was there just last night and reminded why I loathe going there--38 people in line (yes I counted!)--and ONE actual cashier open. It was all self checkout. And the line for those were absurdly long, too.

I went to the manager (to ask if there was please another cashier available, didn't go all Karen) and got this, "Four people called out because of the rain." She didn't even lift her eyes to look at me.

She did do something though as in a few more minutes another cashier did open.

They (all the grocery stores) have jacked up prices beyond reason and we're getting less (shrinkflation) for a helluva lot more. AND they want we the CUSTOMERS to work for free. While they have a video camera in our faces insinuating we are thieves. And they have the nerve to bitch about "shrinkage" (theft) from the self checkouts. I have ZERO sympathy for these bastards.

I only go there b/c Publix's prices have gone absolutely insane in the past year--I can only afford BOGO there now. Seriously.

Ok--end rant...sorry! :-/

Totally agree.

The price of bread has just gone through the roof at our Kroger. And Cereal which has been suggested as a budget stretcher for dinner, is as expensive as chicken.

Conservative logic: "Price gouging is good, actually."

We’ve found that the ‘personality’ of our Kroger stores varies according by location. So do the products and pricing - which makes more sense than the customer service. As more grocery stores open (Publix recently arrived and plans 2 more) the cost of some products go down.

Thanks for point-by-point critique of 45’s rant, Judd, and of WaPo perfidy. another paper off my list.

Really good point. Thank you. Of course, now that you say it.

Thank you Judd! I am so disheartened by how the mainstream media, including WaPo and NYT, as noted in the comment below, are discredited democrats. Also of note, was a comment from David Brooks in his regular segment Friday night on the PBS NewHour (a program I've long admired and trusted, but see "slippage" in them too). Brooks referred to Harris's plan as "economically illiterate." How insulting, misguided and disgusting! We need you more than ever.

Expand full comment

Just remember Brooks knows nothing but himself and talks about nothing but himself. If it appears to benefit David Brooks and those in his perceived social class, it's good. If not, it's bad. Brooks is a prime example of ignorance masquerading under the self delusion that "when you're rich [you have a right to think] you really know" (sorry Tevye). He's wrong. If he disappeared, took an assumed name, put his wealth in trust, moved to a cheap apartment in a high crime, poverty-riddled area and worked two minimum wage jobs just trying to get by for a couple of years, he might have something worthwhile to say. Until then his intellectual masturbation is not even remotely interesting to anyone with half an ounce of knowledge, awareness, sensibility, sensitivity or useful knowledge related to macro and micro economics and on the ground economic realities.

Spot on, Judd. This is why I subscribe. (I do not know why I continue to subscribe to NYT, WAPO and LAT; masochism?)

MSM is FAILING. What is going on here?

Expand full comment

What's going on? Too many very rich people. Might I suggest confiscatory and punitive taxation on the very wealthy? When Ike was President, the highest marginal tax rate on income above $1,000,000 was 91%... Republicans keep wanting to go back to the fifties, I say, let's start with the tax code! Oh, and throw in an asset tax of 10-20% so these deep, dark pools of wealth are re-mobilized into the everyday economy.

Expand full comment

Absolutely. It's not nearly enough to tax their income; need to go after their assets as well. Scrutiny of the tax code for other loopholes is also called for.

Expand full comment

I vaguely remember "luxury taxes" on things like diamonds, furs, yachts, fine cars, etc--waaay back in the day. I wonder what it would've been like having Henry Wallace for president, instead of Truman.

Seth, the more I read the WaPo, the more I question my subscription. Maybe it's time to quit the increasing toxicity of MSM.

The broad hyperventilating by numerous media commentators—many of them even before Harris announced the initial outline of her proposal—was beyond fair skepticism. It was probably influenced by “working the refs” from the affected corporate entities’ communications departments beforehand.

Thank you for this story. I'm sure Kamala's squad will be on it like mud on a pig. It will be so WONDERFUL when she nails Trump with his own history. Quite Obviously, the people backing Trump, Vance, and the puppeteers behind both of them will be in touch, with a hefty contribution so that Trump the puppet will do as he is told. What I don't understand is when the ordinary Trumper understands that Trump ain't for them, they will still vote for the jerk and all the big corporate money behind him.
