On Friday afternoon, in an effort to stem the advertiser exodus, Facebook CEO Zuckerberg had outlined a series of new policies he said would "crack down on voter suppression and fight hate speech." It didn't work. Zuckerberg's proposals were derided by the coalition leading the effort, Stop Hate For Profit, as "a small number of small changes" that won't "make a dent" in Facebook's problems.
So let me get this straight. Facebook is defending its racist, far right leaning misinformation and spread of downright lies with “there is more good content than bad“. That’s kind of like a killer defending himself with “I murder people quickly so they don’t suffer” FB’s response is too little, too late and just plain PATHETIC!
I quit FB over a decade ago. It INFURIATES me when businesses, groups, and even columnists (I’m talking about you, Nick Kristoff) use FB as their primary means of communication with customers/members/readers. It wasn’t easy to delete my account completely, and policies that would induce me to resurrect it are unconscionable. Surely there are less insidious alternatives. If not, it’s time for some competition.
I Deleted Facebook a couple years ago &, as Katy Bolger states in her reply, “it’s on FB” is a deal breaker for me. I seriously can not fathom anyone still being on & using Facebook. If you want to stay in touch with friends, write a letter or pick up the phone. If you want to stay in touch with a group, set up a meeting. Facebook is NOT a substitute for human contact nor should it be treated as such.
I know how you feel. I deleted a year ago, and when so many people say, "It's on FB," for me, that's a deal breaker. Such a shame this monopoly/cesspool has overtaken discourse in the world.
Dollar bills (and to a lesser degree total users of the platform) are the only thing that will get Facebook to take real action. It's uplifting to see a growing list of these companies, some of them massive multi-national corps pull a month of advertising, but I suspect a month won't cut it.
Money talks. Total users is a tough nut too. I DELETED my Facebook account (1500 "friends", 12 years of content) after the Cambridge Analytica crime in 2016. For a hot minute there was a "delete Facebook" trend, burned out fast, just a blip.
I continue to use Facebook to stay in touch with a sports club that I belong to that is a 2-3 hour drive away. I get lots of ads on FB popping up from Eileen Fisher, who has launched a big BLM support campaign on her website. I have also recently noticed lots of fake people or bots posting divisive content on a local small town group page that I follow. It became apparent by the poor grammar and sentence construction that these posts were not written by native-English speakers and that they were race baiting. When I asked one of these guys if he was working for the Trump campaign, he told me that he was looking for white supremists, while posting under the guise of a BLM supporter. I have also seen people posting known false claims. Efforts to report these fake accounts and debunked factual claims are not easy to make with the reporting system on FB. The choices given when reporting such claims do not include false facts or fake accounts, but things like harassment, repetitive. So the system is rigged against reporting these fake news claims or fake accounts that post statements to rile up a community against certain political actions.
Keep at it. I know the murk is deep but you’ve got advertisers attention now. Let’s hope these companies and more flee Face Book like rats from a sinking ship. Seems to be the only way to get Zuckerberg’s attention. Hit him in the pocket!

In a normal society, FB's response would be regulated and found negligent, possibly criminally negligent. But, orange blob ...
Thank for your integrity, thanks for your reporting. You’re making a difference in these crazy times.

Keep it up Judd!

It is a private company, but it operates under the laws of the United States (and California). Rise up against the machine. Thank you Judd.
