I live in NC. Was binge watching a TV series on Hulu this weekend so I saw this ad every 10 minutes, endlessly. My 2 reactions: Deep sadness for this father and 100% certainty that it was a distortion of the truth. Grateful to know the truth now and sorry to be reminded of the contempt the Republican Party has for everyday people.
Yes, contempt for everyday people, you have that right. And yet some of them crow about being "the party of Lincoln". We are wandering in a nightmare of deliberate lies and unconscious delusions.
This is yet another example of why we should, not only demand, but effect revision or repeal of Citizens United. That and stronger guidelines on how PACs employ negative ads without direct links to campaigns. The effects of big/dark money in politics are out of control and need to be stopped.

We need to see how this can be done. It can’t be an outright “repeal” because there was a series of SCOTUS decisions culminating with the Citizens United case that demolished the McCain-Feingold McCain Act passed by Congress & other legislative limitations. (https://ballotpedia.org/Bipartisan_Campaign_Reform_Act) Mitch McConnell got the ball rolling.
I am quite well aware of just how difficult and involved this process will be. At the same time, I am "hopeful" that it can, in fact, be done. I am further inspired after listening to President Obama's recent discussion at Colgate University. Well worth watching/ listening to.
There must be some powerful lawyers that can help this man. And a PAC that can run an alternative ad with him in it telling the truth about the lying ad he was manipulated into being in.
I ultimately blame this super PAC for the deception, but I wish Mr. Hayes had been more suspicious of Luethy and his other contacts. If someone's inviting me to a luxury home with copies of their book to talk about my dead son, alarm bells would be going off.
You being suspicious does not invalidate Mr. Hayes reasoning. Maybe he saw an opportunity to speak about his son and the need to end gun violence. Victim blaming is reprehensible and should always be discouraged; be it from a comment on a Substack to questioning the veracity of victims of a crime.
Fair point. It's a worthy cause to want to end gun violence, and I can't imagine how I'd feel in his situation. It's unfortunate that anyone would be sought after as a political pawn like this.

They aren’t sophisticated political operatives. They are motivated by grief and a desire to create meaning from the death of a loved one. Political co-opting of the death of Mr. Haye’s son is something that increases grief & guilt many times over.
Governor Roy Cooper's opponent, Michael Whatley appeared on a RW podcast and said that Republicans should unite to cover up the Epstein files, to prevent it further damaging the GOP.
Whatley is a pedophile protector. Part of the problem. Who belongs in prison; not in elected office.

The story of that despicable ad blaming Roy Cooper, former governor of North Carolina, for crimes committed in South Carolina and incarcerated there should have been at the top of this article in my opinion. And the fact that Cooper’s Republican opponent knowingly hired Harvey L West a man convicted of sex offenses with a minor to work for the NC Republican Party should also be a major point in this article.
Also the man who killed that woman on the Charlotte light rail had uncontrolled schizophrenia. The family had desperately trying to get him help but because of all the cuts to mental health services by our Republican-dominated state legislature they could not access the inpatient care the man desperately needed.
Here’s an idea (that will never happen): for every political ad making an outrageous accusation against the other side, the accused side must be given at least equal time and ad placement to rebut the accusation, with one restriction: before airing, the rebuttal must be judged as objectively true, or at least credible by the evidence, by a neutral judge. No ‘he said she said.’ This must occur as quickly as possible. Any ad making controversial accusations should not be permitted so close to Election Day that rebutting it in time would be impossible. Any venue (regardless of private ownership) allowing a violation of this rule would be banned from airing political ads favoring the party making the provably false allegations for 3 future election cycles. And any costs associated with airing the rebuttal should be charged to those who made the deceptive claims.
This would make venues hesitant about accepting ads that make strong accusations, so that they are not forced to air rebuttals. This would give viewers relief.
I have seen so called rebuttal ads that were ineffective because they didn’t address what should have been the glaring fact that they were rebutting anything. They just stated the truth, and the viewer had to recall for himself that the opposition had claimed the opposite. A rebuttal should point directly at the false accusation and declare it deliberately false, not a mistake or a misunderstanding. And present the truth in line by line parallel so the contrast is as stark as possible. Some will claim that repeating the lies this way reinforces them. That is only true if it’s badly done.

Repealing Citizens United might make it harder for Rethugs to cheat and lie, but it cannot make them stop being cheaters and liars.
