This is insane. These two networks and their ridiculous business segments are like giant pinball machines. Armed with a new study that points to the devastating economic effects of addiction, officials at New Futures say they will resume their push to fully implement a state law, passed in 2001, that dedicates 5 percent of gross profits from the New Hampshire Liquor Commission to treatment programs.
The state legislature has done an end-run around the law every year since it was passed, according to Tricia Lucas, advocacy director at New Futures, the statewide non-profit dedicated to reducing alcohol and drug problems in the Granite State.
If the law in question, RSA 176:16, section III, had been enforced in the current budget, Lucas points out, the formula would have produced $8.5 million for treatment and rehabilitation programs, rather than the $1.8 million in the Department of Health and Human Services budget.
Faced with competing needs, lawmakers have consistently suspended RSA 176 and instead authorized a much smaller allocation to DHHS for substance abuse programs."
But Tym Rourke, chair of the Governor’s Commission on Substance Abuse and Prevention, thinks the tide may be turning, with the state in the middle of a well-documented addiction crisis that is affecting public safety and the economy.
“We now have concrete economic data that really speaks to the scale of the issue and how deeply it is impacting our economy,” said Rourke, referring to the study released today.
“And it’s being released under the landscape of a very significant, very visible heroin and opium epidemic in our state, which is hard to deny,” he added.
The 45-page analysis by economist Brian Gottlob of PolEcon Research paints a picture of the problem in painstaking detail. Using data from a variety of sources, he makes the case that alcohol and drug abuse cost the state’s economy more than $1.8 billion in lost productivity, law enforcement, medical expense and slower economic growth.
And that doesn’t even count the impact of higher mortality rates from overdoses.
The report, titled “The Corrosive Effects of Alcohol and Drug Misuse on NH’s Workforce and Economy,” hammers home the point that investment in recovery and rehabilitation is not just a matter of social welfare; it’s an economic imperative."

This renders the predictions on Kalshi and other prediction markets completely bogus when it comes to tracking public opinion. All they really track is who has the money to place bets which make what they want to happen seem more likely. For a few bucks, those with money can now shape what is portrayed to be public opinion in any way they like. A big bet can make something appear popular which 99% of the general public hates.
I guess I miss the days when accuracy, honesty, and integrity figured into the news. I, too rely on Public Media which is (mostly) better.
