The Oligarchs aren't even bothering to pretend they don't dig censoring any speech critical of them or the Right.

BTAM Master's avatar

And Trump et al doesn't even attempt to hide their corruption. We've hit quite the milestone (head on).

One more reason for Democrats to go after big tech with the Anti-trust guns blazing. We know that this is one of Zuckerberg, Musk, Ellison, Bezos, etc. greatest fears. They told us so when they went after Lena Khan with such hatred.

Kate McMullan's avatar

Zuckerberg has a lot to answer for.

Katy Bolger's avatar

Uckerberg has had a lot to answer for since day one and he has learned to oil himself up and slip right through.

Facebook/Meta is not an essential service.

All No Kings has to do is say fine, we don’t need Zuckerberg.

Don’t advertise on Meta, Don’t communicate on Meta. Find alternatives&there are some.

Why contribute to Meta if they no longer provide services?

This seems to me and you a simple solution. But being addicted takes willpower to quit even when the thing makes you physically and mentally ill. Having had fierce addictions, I know what it takes to quit. Even Facebook, which made me nauseous, was difficult to fully quit. As with cigarettes, booze and drugs, you cannot have your addiction in the house. You must cut the cords and go through the withdrawal of social media. Look up August Lamm, she is fighting the good fight, seemingly singlehandedly.

Terry's avatar

You had trouble quitting Facebook? When I learned trump was reelected, that was it for me. So much misinformation on Facebook that they didn't care about. When I was searching how to deactivate, I came the TOS. Which stated they gave my data to the government. Oh hell nah, so i kept searching and deactivated that day. I don't miss it, same as I don't miss Twitter. I deactivated my account when it was announced musk was buying. Not when he bought. When it first announced. I use bluesky now. I rarely am on tiktok, same reason. Trump sold us out to companies located in the USA. They don't give a shit about misinformation, or bots using disgusting names. Reporting them does absolutely nothing. Calling someone a potato and I received a strike.

Frau Katze's avatar

What are the alternatives?

Suki Herr's avatar

Bluesky, Mastadon,Nextdoor, Telegram, Signal Hobby apps,Strava, Straw Page, Be Real, Lemon8…

My best friend during my 20s said: No wonder you don’t talk much, your first thought is the wrong thing. I almost said Truth Social but I recognize you so I restrained myself.

My husband uses Linkin, but he says it’s devolved into a political cesspool.

I’m retired, but text, email, Substack serve me well.

Frau Katze's avatar

Any widely app will attract all kinds of people. I suggest that one avoid Meta products based on Zuckerberg’s close association with Trump.

Suki Herr's avatar

Me too🤷‍♀️

Terry's avatar

If you don't care that zuckerf*ck gives your data to the government, use meta. I care. If you don't care that they don't stop misinformation anymore, use anything meta. I care. I care a lot. Don't care zuckerf*ck has given trump millions? I care. Substack, bluesky, YouTube and reading a lot of articles on the Guardian, Reuters, AP, NPR, BBC, Al Jazeera, and verifiable truthful.

Even when searching, I learned recently to add - AI after so I'm not answered by the damn AI for everything on my phone. Makes life so much easier and freer.

Terry's avatar

I can't stand Facebook or zuckerf*ck as I call him. Such an ass kisser, Larry Ellison too. What are they going to do when trump is no longer here? Or he's finally impeached and removed from office? Curl up and die? No one can stand vance, so he's easy to get rid of too. Next up, will be speaker of house, which will be a democrat and hopefully not Jeffries. 🤦🏼‍♀️

The sad irony is that for years, consumers have been asking these social media platforms to enforce their stated guidelines to curb hate speech, and now, with Trump in the White House and billionaires at the helm, they're all about enforcement of rules that don't actually apply but at the expense of left-leaning critical voices. Not very encouraging.

Terry's avatar

Meta has zero rules, except what trump wants them to do. They don't stop misinformation whatsoever. I deactivated almost 2 years ago. I never used insta. Twitter is a cesspool of misinformation. My account there has been gone since the announcement that musk was buying.

Don't overlook Joel Kaplan, the VP of Global Policy at Meta. He is a Republican operative, took part in the Brooks Brothers riot that stopped vote counting in Florida that got Bush Jr. elected. Worked in the George W. Bush Chief of Staff office. Helped get Brett Kavanaugh appointed to the Supreme Court. Censored Facebook content that Netanyahu objected to. Banned Tack AIPAC that reports on AIPAC activity... Follow along with this interactive relationship map.

Let's update Diderot, 'Americans won't be free until the last GOP fascist is strangled with the entrails of the last tech billionaire.'

Tech billionaires are weaponizing algorithms to suppress votes and distort elections. See how social platforms are turned against American democracy from censoring No Kings Rallies to denying Starlink to Ukraine.

Yet another reason why we should all dump Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, WhatsApp, Substack and any other corporate/billionaire-owned social media and go with Mastodon, an open-source, non-algorithm, no ads, decentralized social media platform.

Related to this post is the fact that people in Ukraine are dying because Musk and Trump have cut off access to Starlink in Ukraine. This is what happens when we let our billionaires (or rather trillionaires) and criminals run our country.

We have to let companies know that if the only way to communicate with them is through Facebook or one of the other right wing owned media, then we will not do business with them.

Too many of the businesses that I come across online direct me to Facebook, which I cancelled several years ago.

Terry's avatar

If you're looking them up online, like a search? In your search, use - Facebook after whatever you're searching for. That will direct you to their website, not facebook. There's a way to block facebook, except I don't remember it now because my phone wouldn't give me the option. Samsung Galaxy S26. So, I use - Facebook and I use - AI too. No AI answers!

Linda Slater's avatar

I will try that. Thanks

Katy Bolger's avatar

Dr. Bob: "We" are not "letting" the Billionaires of the Epstein Class do anything. Congress is. Or rather, Republicans in Congress are. Our power lies in cutting the cords to these cesspools, protesting and voting. There is a fourth box, but it escapes me now.

Linda Slater's avatar

Exactly, But….we ( the collective we) elect these self serving jerks and expect them to act in an honorable way on our behalf. It has been very clear for over a generation that this has not been the intention of the Republican Party. “What is good for General Motors IS good for the Country”. Anyone old enough to remember that one? Ronnie Raygun snookered everyone into believing that he was smart, patriotic, and not just an empty suit in the roll of President with an adoring little wifey who knew how to dress. GHW Bush who rerigged the banking laws to bail out his son who got caught in a savings and loan scandal. Nixon, of course. Then Two terms of Baby Bush who let Dick Cheney et al rush us into stupid wars with Afghanistan and Iraq because they wanted oil from one and a pipe line for oil from the other.

All of this devolution of what public service is meant to be within the Republican party has led us directly to Donald Trump, where it bothers them not at all that they rally behind a convicted felon and sex offender, as long as they can hold power.

To say that the Republican Party is rotted from the core is an understatement. The question is: will we allow that rot to infect our government further, or will we cut the rot out and see if it is possible to heal the wound.

Katy Bolger's avatar

Right on, Linda, there is a long trail of shit running from Nixon to Twump specifically inside the Republican party. Ronald Reagan was a rat and a shape shifter. Nixon was a crook, a liar and a megalomaniac. The Bushes were just plain stupid, or unenlightened, take your pick. Daddy Bush knew that those men from the evangelical churches had no business in politics but he opened the door anyway. Baby Bush, I think we all his horror story. I forgot about Gerald Ford but that's understandable. And now, fn Twump, the worse of the worst. He has no business leading this country, or maybe the country has changed so much, this is exactly the president to finish the job. The job was to keep democracy going, the idea is that it could go either way: succeed or fail. The GOP has been trying to end democracy in our lifetime and hand it to the monarchs. uh, oligarchs.

Let’s see - if the spokesperson for Meta tells the truth then I am the pope and I wear a long white dress.

Katy Bolger's avatar

Not surprised, as Pres. George W, Bush once said, "Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me - you can't get fooled again." How many times does Mark Uckerberg, Leon Musk and Jeff Bozos, to name a few common rats, have to show you who they are and what they are capable of? No Kings means no Kings, monarchs, non-elected rulers, despots, emperors or oligarchs. At least that is what it should mean. Are we so stupid to think kings are bad but the Billionaires of the Epstein Class are okay with democracy and government oversight? Don't be stupid, dahling.

Nancy's avatar

You're so right, and your post made me smile! I think it was the last line. Yes, let's try not to be completely stupid here, which means supine in the face of the mob!

How do we stop these oligarchs? There has to be a way! They think they are the most important people in the world! They should never had this much wealth. No one should. IMO it makes one sick mentally. Plus this wealth should be shared bc we the people bought the products, people worked at the companies. They have to be stopped.

David Dimston's avatar

This is not about antitrust and if the US government decides to pursue this avenue for prosecution it will be twenty five years, at least before there is, at best, a half assed settlement. Few remember the antitrust lawsuits against AT&T, IBM and DuPont, they happened decades ago and too decades to wind their way through the court system.

On the other hand regulation by declaration of the government brings a different set of actors onto the stage. One could argue that META and its affiliates like StarLink for example are not so pervasive as to have become utilities. By defining them as utilities they become subject to terms of service, service quality requirements, safety requirements and compliance requirements. Declaration of META as a public utility would accept the reality that they are so intertwined in our society that they require government oversight.

Mark's avatar

But not until Republicans not longer control Congress and the White House because it would be a waste of time and energy.

DELETE YOUR META ACCOUNTS. It's easy to do, and you'll feel freer, folks.

Incomplete unless you do the same with "X." Both are cesspools run by bots and ghouls.
