Keep digging into the sources of the dark money that's been trying and will keep trying to destroy democracy.

Dems in Congress must hammer on key existential threats to life and to democracy: avoiding nuclear war, controlling climate chaos, regulating AI, decreasing the concentration of wealth and income, and regulating money in politics. They must also show the voters that they will oppose the profiteers who drive war and the incredible waste of $2 trillion every year in our dysfunctional health system.

Along with that list, extreme tax reform that favors the working person, and NOT the wealthy. Tax loopholes must be eliminated, with one flat tax rate for all. That includes corporations.

Tom's avatar

Sorry, can't agree. Progressive taxation rates are the basis of reducing wealth inequality. Aside from closing loopholes, to me, we need a wealth tax. The rich know that income and capital gains are for chumps.

In addition, existential threats to health include the environment that is contributing to ill health as well as affordable health.

Sure thing. What do you wanna do after lunch😏

democrats must be seen to be fighting for these things that will take a long time to accomplish. But that’s not what they did when they went all in to impeach Trump based on his actions vis a vis Ukraine.

push for release of the TRUMP-EPSTEIN FILES!

Our national nightmare has not yet ended... Trump is still President, at least for now...but our country has awakened!! What great results... people were sick and tired of being sick and tired!!! Wisconsin not only elected its first black governor (D), but flipped both houses!! So proud of Texas, South Carolina, Iowa, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, Maine, North Carolina and all the rest of us!!! The sunrise is gonna look so much brighter this morning!!! Mike Herring

Well, Democrats, you have control of Congress. Do something with that. We non-politicians also can't go to sleep. Without a people-powered movement working in parallel with the electoral approach of moving the Dems left, these gains won't have nearly the impact we're hoping for.

that may have taken care of itself. meantime we have much bigger fish to fry.

Now to show some guts and get our nation back. And protect it from ever seeing this kind of sham again.

One of the most important things we have to do. NEVER AGAIN.

We need policy answers. The two biggest issues are: quality of life, which includes poverty, inequality, concentrated wealth and basic human needs (not luxuries), and the issue that we refuse to face is the biggest: global warming. How do we move towards clean energy? We must. All forms of transportation. We need to focus on answers now. Thanks for all you do, Tx Trumbo

It will take several years of hard, consistent work to recover from the damage Republicans and neoliberal allies have caused in the USA and rest of the world since 1980.

BRIDGET's avatar

It will take multiple generations to recover from the last two years. And unfortunately the attention span of the average American doesn't have the wherewithal to see it through...at least not with the recent Democratic leadership. Hoping that can change.

Rick A.'s avatar

Bridget, yes, it will take generations. And it will take principled, visionary and courageous leaders to lead us and to rebuild and reshape and restore and improve the political architecture and structure of the country. Pray we elevate and follow the right people. As Lincoln said, we must think anew, act anew, and thus save our country.

Since 1970, for those of us from the Watergate/Nixon days….

Americans need to realize that destroying things takes a very short time but building them takes long-term sustained effort. A war can be started with a single attack. a building can be destroyed in a matter of days. The economy can be pillaged overnight. people can be fired and sent home. Stopping a war, rebuilding a building, restoring economic quality, hiring people who know what they're doing and training them all take a lot of time in Americans are interested in instant gratification. they grow bored. I imagine backlash when they can't immediately drop gas to three bucks a gallon and end the war. The colossal damage done by these thieves is going to take decades to fix. keep that in mind

Paula Kellogg's avatar

I wish you were incorrect, but you are not. Some things won't take decades, but defiantly TIME. More time than I think most of us are willing to accept. But accept we must. Because the end goal is way toooooooooo important.

J Hardy Carroll's avatar

we have an opportunity to do Reformation instead of just restoration. there was a reason why Trump won in the first place and that was because the system is designed to protect the wealthy. I am not excited about Jeffries and other corporate Democrats having control because they are getting the same paychecks, although arguably not as large

Julie Zeppieri's avatar

I agree. It's time for some real change, not just a fix of what was broken. I, too, would love to see corporate dems held just as accountable as repubs for the mess we are in and to have them removed from their seats of power within the party. I would like to see real systemic changes take place to help protect us from a repeat of any of this.

Get bills passed to help all Americans and at the same time hold the administration accountable for DOGE and crypto scams and grifters.

Last night was repudiation of tRump’s unconstitutional and criminal leadership. I hope the people who are tRumpers don’t rise up violently, but instead peacefully accept the changes from our recent racist, xenophobic, anti-LGBTQ, pedophiliac unamerican way of life. tRump should be prosecuted!

heck...I hope for even more - that some of the people who voted for Trump chose...(in my view) more wisely this time...or left things blank.

Big challenge - help those folks who are so fearful about "the other" and have felt (and sometimes actually been) put down become part of a rebuilding of trust and pride and a thirst for hands together building "a more perfect union".

Nobody says hopes have to be realistic.

That's why I really like this column - going to call out corruption no matter who does it - and let information be the sunlight. (gotta admit I'd never be a politician - such a hard job - when to compromise, how to work things - grateful that some very good people want to do it )

Profoundly relieved and very proud of the American people who upheld democracy - and deeply grateful to all those who wrote postcards, made phone calls, knocked on doors, and served at polling places. Tomorrow we get back to work. But today, we hug each other, give a big sigh of relief, and get a good night’s sleep.

I hope they tuck their hate away and decide to become decent people. We need to work together to undo the damage that has been done and move forward positively. I would love to see the Epstein files released.

Adam's avatar

There is no "tuck their hate away and become decent people" option I'm afraid. These folks are pathological and will never stop trying to take control. We all need to keep that in mind.

They may fold up their robes and put them away, but only for now, as they fully intend to put them back on some day. Soon as they are able. It is their religion. The history they homeschool to their children.
