Propaganda masquerading as journalism has been around for centuries, FOX and OAN as an example are just the latest manifestations. There is plenty of blame to go around but ultimately it is the consumer of this propaganda that are the suckers. Our culture has embraced zero responsibility for just about anything. Men paying for sex, blame the prostitutes! Men spending their pay on strippers and pole dancers? Burn the witches(in jest)! Alcoholism, drug addiction, payday lending, you name it, it is never the consumers fault, they are brainless innocents.
When I use the delete button to trash 90% of my in box every morning, I make a choice, I make a decision. I realize, albeit late in life, that you can’t prevent a stupid person doing stupid things, all you can do is stay out of the splatter zone.
Great post. You can’t legislate behavior. Part of having freedoms is being free to make poor choices and reap the results of those choices. Too many people want to be exempt from accountability of their choices.
They're catering to an audience that is determined to seek out an alternative reality to the one the facts would otherwise dictate. It just feels like we're at a point of dangerously low media literacy. Like, why on Earth would you trust a website you've, in all probability, never heard of?
I've had this discussion with my mom several times. She'll tell me some piece of news she reads on the Internet, so I'll ask for her source, and she'll tell me she "saw it on Facebook." Not a reputable source, Mom.
As a media literacy teacher, I show my students how to trace the source. First, get off of Facebook. Second, go to the internet and put in the entire comment or use phrases that stand out. When a piece of shit arises, it will always be replicated. Choose any that seem legit and again, follow its source. It's actually fun once you learn how and know the tools that can help. But as you get better at it, you can begin to find sources that are biased and nonprofessional and made up of pure opinion (another thing that is good to be able to distinguish). Mom might have fun but it's probably easier on a computer than a phone. The phones as media tools really suck for anything but headlines and tweets for lay people.
Well, we know now which ARE the fake news sites, thank you, Judd.
I stole some of your writing and posted on the "New Hampshire Daily" FB page:
"How can you be "independent" - when you are owned or paid for by "One Nation"? One Nation works in concert with the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), the super PAC of Senate Republicans, and has directly contributed over $70 million to the SLF this political cycle."
I suggest everyone does the same with all those sites. Most if not all have FB pages. At least give the people reading this slop the chance to know what's behind it. People in high places are too used to never getting called out.
And the people of New Hampshire, Ohio, Georgia, Maine and Iowa deserve better.
Will everybody who read my comment and "liked" it - or even if you didn't - PLEASE comment on the FB pages of these sites? We CAN do something ourselves to stop SM spreading lies.
Not surprised to see Ohio as one of the fake news states. The R’s are flooding the zone with negative ads on Sherrod Brown and Amy Acton, though I see it mostly on YouTube, interestingly. Brown should have a decent shot against Husted. Acton seems like a bit of a twit who’s banking on voter dissatisfaction with the GOP.
Ossoff seems like he has grounds to sue if the statements cross the line into knowing falsehood. The fact that PACs can libel someone anonymously and enjoy tax and 1st Amendment protection is outrageous.
Only way the Rs win is via cheating (lies, severe gerrymandering, etc) never on their own accomplishments, or lack there of.
I have resigned myself to the fact that if the 💩 for brains voters pull the R lever and think their life will get better….. good luck. I can’t stop them and no use in trying.
Conservative/libertarians of today have policies that most working people, when they get beneath the surface, do not approve. The vote in Missouri by the people to keep the income tax means voters are understanding the failure of the conservative/libertarian utopia promoted. The con/lib endgame is a might is right society where those with the most make all the rules for everyone else while allowing them to do whatever they want.
There's a sucker born every minute and a dum-dum dropping out of school everyday. There are uneducated people doom scrolling and zombies spouting the rhetoric (here a fancy word for shit) of the greedy liars and misogynist racists on every X posting. We need a hero.
Judd- Thanks to Popular Info for information like this which lays bare the lies spread by those Republicans who will do anything to hang on to their power. Looking at you, IA Senators Grassley & Ernst & Rep Hinson!!
With nothing to run on but fealty to Dear Leader, what do you expect? The Pubbies have to do something to make it sound like they have done something with their majority other than give tax breaks to billionaires and let Trump run roughshod over the Constitution. Why not create a bunch of phony news organizations (after all, what is Fox but a phony news organization) to make up shit that makes them look like they care about the people they represent in name only.
Those of us old farts in the room remember standing in line at the grocery store reading The Enquirer, The World News, and the other tabloids with screaming headlines like Man Gives Birth to Baby, Big Foot Seen in Upper Peninsula (exclusive pictures) and Burt and Loni together, forever. The method of delivery may not be paper and ink but One Nations assumption of the American public is the same - you are idiots and we will take advantage of you. Whereas the public and the actual producers of the sensationalist tabloid rags tacitly understood that they were not really serious, the anonymous clowns with blow torches in the Senate Leadership Fund backing One Nation digital rags actually want voters to take them seriously because they honestly believe all that shit they honestly believe.
Thank you! If Republicans have no real accomplishments for their constituents, they’ll just make this stuff up. Sadly, too many are inclined to believe them.

Agreed, and you are never going to get Americans as a country to say “I’m sorry” or “I was wrong”.

"God told me" is what my mom said at times. Hard one to overcome that argument! Hahahaha.

Important to know.

Cue offstage barks of bitter laughter.
Thank you for continuing to bring the light and truth as well as a high standard of journalism to us all. We desperately need it
