Meatpacking facilities are ideal environments for spreading COVID-19. Cramped facilities make social distancing virtually impossible, and the "pace and physical demands of processing work made adherence to face-covering recommendations difficult." A poorly-paid workforce is "incentivized to work while ill as a result of medical leave and disability policies and attendance bonuses that could encourage working while experiencing symptoms." And rampant consolidation means that many slaughterhouses have hundreds or thousands of employees under one roof.
I was busy yesterday. So here goes. The monied hands in this whole damned response is disgusting. I love to hate the 1%. Back when my kids were young, we went to the Eastern Shore of VA via the Bay bridge tunnel on the way to Chincoteague.
We came upon 2 processing plants. Tyson and Perdue. The smell was ungodly but we followed a rendering truck for five miles before we couldn't stand it. The seagulls riding the sky above that open dump, diving in for feet and guts, was disgusting and yet fascinating.
My kids opted out of chicken nuggets for the rest of the trip.
If the thought of Covid-19 breath on your chicken hasn't bothered you, thought maybe this would.
Judd, how much faster is 175 chickens per minute? And, the folks at that factory seem to have a union; why isn't it protecting them?
So glad you are at work! Excellent journalism and so grateful you are effective.
Thank you Judd this was more than eye opening
😤 😡 🤮
Unions don't have jurisdiction for contract workers and the union workers are now under the DPA with little protection from the unions

Good job Judd.
