On Monday, Popular Information published a story revealing that a top executive with the College Board, Todd Huston, played a central role in advancing legislation to "limit what teachers can say regarding race, history, and politics in Indiana classrooms." The College Board is the organization that produces Advanced Placement (AP) classes, shaping curriculum for millions of students.
Great work Judd. I cannot imagine that the College Board were not aware of Huston's legislative activities and therefore we can reasonably assume that the members are in agreement with them. The most egregious aspect of these bills is the exposure of teachers and schools to being sued by parents with legal/financial assistance from far right organisations. The Texas abortion vigilante law seems to be metastasizing to threaten every sphere of American life. I'm reminded of Eastern Germany before the fall of the Berlin wall where the Stasi recruited spies in the general population to report on friends and neighbors. If these laws are implemented, everyone can aspire to being a bounty hunter.
Thank you! I feel that the poor education system here in the USA is a major reason behind so many of the problems we face today. We should require mandatory classes in American history (facts, not feel-good fantasy), civics, & logic, along with science & math for a high school diploma.
And, the teachers must be trained in the details and learn how to make this information interesting. I remember being in a top (20) highschool in which I had a young but very boring history teacher--he read from his notes. Education is so precious, and worthy of developing it to a fine art.
Huge congratulations and thanks! You’ve influenced a lot of change during my relative short time as a reader, and I believe this particular issue is the most pivotal you’ve tackled thus far. So proud to be a subscriber supporting your work even in the tiniest of ways.
Judd, it's so satisfying to see that what you do has a direct and immediate impact. I hope you keep pressing the College Board, given their influence over national curriculum. What did Huston do there? Did he have a role in shaping curriculum? Was his point of view prevalent throughout the organization? Who does the College Board report to? Is there any meaningful oversight of their activities? Or is this just another vast bureaucratic black hole?
While still a work in progress, this is an incredible example of accountability journalism. Keep up the great work Judd! I can only hope more news orgs adopt this approach to hold people in power to account
Here in Iowa, the Republican Governor wants to bar teachers from covering topics that might make white people feel guilty about white Americas' flawed history. Am wondering if diplomas from high schools with censored curricula will damage Iowa's high school grads as they seek admission to the nation's better colleges and universities? (It should.) And Governors who play fast and loose with American history should get the blame for damaging the college prospects of their state's high school graduates.
Yes! I was musing that Judd needs some people with a good sense of humor in his life--it can be goofy or clever. But lightening up with humor helps us all!

Chilling comparison, but have to agree.
Absolutely agree with your comparison. Truly scary, indeed.

Great work Judd. You are making a difference. We so need this type of transparency or bad behavior is normalized.

Todd and mediocrity.
I salute you for bringing this jerk into the public eye. This is why I support you and other journalists on Substack.
He’ll get lots of offers from “Christian” colleges now. He’s not worried
