Everyone who supported or supports the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol and its instigators, thereby supports insurrectionists who attacked and caused the death of police officers. It is the height (or depth?) of hypocrisy for those very people to claim they oppose Adeel Mangi based on flimsy indirect connections.

Hypocrisy isn't the half of it. It's racism. It's Islamophobia. It's projection. Republicans support, without question or hesitation, real terrorists and their Orange leader, but have convinced themselves, and many of their cowardly colleagues, that only brown or Muslim people can be terrorists. It's f'king disgusting.

Mostly agree, with one exception. Islam is a religion, not a race. Muslims, like Jews and Christians, come in all colors, all races. Bigotry against Muslims is wrong; it is horrible; it is not as such racist.

The racism does not arise from his religion, that's just plain old Islamophobia, the racist comes from his ethnicity and his skin color.

Exactly Peter. Thank you for your apt description.

Adeel Manji and Merrick Garland look a lot alike, including their skin color in online photos. Do you call hostile smear attacks on Merrick Garland racist?

Expand full comment

Oh please. Other than the salt and pepper hair they do not look remotely alike.

"Islam is a religion not a race" is the exact phrase I see from a lot of racist sickos. You're wrong on this one Joan. Please don't be so naive.

An Irish woman I know converted to Islam. Did her race change when she did that? A Jamaican friend converted to Judaism. Did her race change? Nazis would say yes in both cases. Do we give Nazis and white supremacists the deciding vote on race?

Expand full comment

The point being that Islamophobia is derived from racists' hatred of non-whites. They view Islam as a religion of "brown people" hence the discrimination, abuse and hatred of Muslims.

Since the concept of "race" exists solely to give people a tool to oppress others, I'm fine letting the white supremacists be the ones to define their terms.

So here is what is weird to me, in addition to race being a bogus concept constantly redefined for the sake of the bigotries of the moment.

I was born in the US shortly after World War II, in which hundreds of my relatives known by name to my grandparents had been slaughtered in the name of purifying the Aryan race by getting rid of Jews. In reaction, Jews in the US worked hard to be seen as anything other than a race - a religion, an ethnicity, a culture. We weren't even a little bit white here then. Most of us were not black either. Over time, lighter skinned Jews became conditionally, sort of white - never all the way there, but enough so the cops didn't shoot you unless you were demonstrating for civil rights with your black friends, the colleges let more of you in, that sort of thing. Recently bigoted violence against Jews here has increased a lot, often by people who are in fact racists in the classic white vs black sense of the word, but we still don't call antisemitism racism. So that's my context. And it totally puzzles me that some progressive people are in a big hurry to call my Muslim cousins a race. How does that do them any good?

And the claims are not just flimsy but slanderous when Manji's work is shown and described.

Agreed, indeed Valerie. Happy Monday by the way.

Manchin…”Not in my wheelhouse”? The comment made me do a bit of research on his Mangi position. His reasoning is infuriating and bogus. On his way out he is doing even more harm than when in office.

Yes, his true colors are being revealed. [In addition, I saw his racism revealed during the Kennedy Center honoring of Garth Brooks: many black performers sang his songs and Garth was crying and audience members were looking joyful--each time Joe Manchin's face looked sour and disgusted! The setting was outdoors in a large tent during Covid.]

I did email my representatives and got nothing in response. Aggravating, frustrating, disillusioning and just so sad.

I am deeply saddened by any lack of appreciation for Adeel Mangi's brilliant life of demonstrating integrity and protection via his legal training. We can realize what a demanding job all Senators have in keeping up with all of the issues we all must deal with, and those specific to each of their states (natural disasters, homelessness). However, most obviously do not have the giant heart that makes it possible for Senator Cory Booker to care about and speak out on so many important matters. It appears that the Democrat Senators Cortez-Masto and Rosen are overwhelmed with their senatorial responsibilities and depend on loud opinions of trashing and false negativity readily available through dark money. Neither appears up to the job.

We can feel relief and pride when anyone with power in the field of law works with Alliance of Families for Justice (AFJ), a group that advocates for the rights of incarcerated people and their families is a valuable arm of justice for those who are frequently abused and scapegoated by our nervous justice system. I would think that Fetterman would speak out on this if he has been able to study it yet.

As Judd reported before, at the Senate Judicial hearing, Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana actually asked Mangi whether "you celebrate 9/11"! Tom Cotton, Cruz, and Lindsey Graham joined in with inappropriate questions of false accusations. Manji replied like the sane and brilliant man he is.

Adeel Manji is like a modern day "saint" and Republican Senators demonstrate hate and duplicity.

Disappointed and quite surprised to report that neither NY senator, Schumer or Gillibrand, has bothered to respond to my email. Neither can even state a position? Naively, I guess, I expected better from the senators from “liberal” New York state.

Thank you for putting a spotlight on this. Maybe our Dem senators will wake up and see the dark money influence etc. and then do the right thing! ?

So now we're counting on "principled" Republicans to do the right thing re Mangi? Yikes.

Mangi's nomination is opposed by a few police groups yet supported by more. Any democrat who cites concerns about Mangi because of opposition from unspecified "police organizations," should start a new career as a manure spreader destined for great success in America!

Seems like this being the election year the senators, especially Democratic senators who are up for election don't want to give ammunition to their opponents. With any and all elected officials it's about retaining power ➡️ $$$$$

Republicans are all puppets. They are installed by Nat-C and Nazi Fascist billionaires. The RNC operates as an organized crime syndicate, and you cannot expect a Republican official to vote with integrity. Puppets do as puppets are told and Fascism is what they have in store for this country. They’ll call it pretty names, like “Libertarian” or “Smaller Government”—but it comes down to the Shock Doctrine where the Billionaires funnel public money into their pockets as they kill off infrastructure. So don’t expect any RNC assistance—the stupider, least competent and most greedy people are the easiest to manipulate, and a decent judge nomination won’t stand a chance.

I contacted Senator Tammy Duckworth (Illinois) and asked if she supported the nomination. I received no reply. This is especially concerning because her colleague Senator Dick Durbin (Illinois) is the head of the judiciary committee.

If you're with the Penn FOP (and Philly FOP in particular), you're not on the side of justice.

I received an auto response to my note from PA Senator Casey's office with no follow up, and got crickets from Fetterman (who is turning out to be a dissapointment). Cowards.

What is wrong with these Democrats? Are they really that stupid? And this is such a double standard. I hope he doesn’t drop out.

Very disturbing and as usual, an excellent report that highlights a broader trend. This leads us back full circle to the Wilsonian neutrality defense versus our obligations to support allies.

Thanks Judd for working on this over the Easter weekend. Part of the reason the US is so divided is spineless and weak Democrats allowing the Repugs to get away with dirty tactics like this. If they don't have the stomach for a fight they shouldn't have entered politics in the first place.
