I feel like I'm preaching to the choir here when I say that Trump is pointing to rampant violent crime in "blue" cities based on zero evidence to obfuscate the real financial and war crimes he and his corrupt administration commit on a regular basis. They're barely trying to hide evidence of their wrongdoing, and yet we'll still get mostly complicity from mass media.

No matter how hard they lie, right wingers can't change the fact that murder rates are lower in blue states and blue cities than in red states and red cities. And no matter how hard they lie the problem is not video games or mental health or race, the problem is guns. A country awash in guns, no more so than in red states that value guns over children.

Where Rebecca uses crime statistics, Twump measures "decline" by the color of the faces in the cities. In a heavily Black city like Oakland, it's all but "gone" according to the racist-in-chief. For NYC, it is all those Asians, Hispanics, Blacks, ohmygod, the not-whites, that cause Twump to sputter. Anyone living in New York knows it is the greatest city in the world. As for Chicago, home of Obama: well, nuff said.

Twump's filter is racism, his measure is hatred, his numbers are lies, always always always lies.

Just want to put my opinion out there…

I believe that most Democrats are compassionate, well educated, and cognizant of the permanent damage that happens to any child who is treated as if they were an unwelcome problem of no value. Lack of nurturance produces brutish behavior.

Poverty and hopelessness produces desperate people who will do anything to survive.

The lack of education, nurturance and options for impoverished people causes crime, imo.

Democrats create more social support which relieves the worst effects of poverty and thus the despair that causes crime.

Red leaders disparage the poor and reduce social supports. So people do what they can to live. Uneducated, impoverished and untrained, they are prey to criminals and criminal behaviors.

We are a 3-class society: the impoverished, the employed who are at least partially educated and employed, and the wealthy.

Bottom line, my opinion is that poverty creates crime. The wealthy create poverty.

JenneJ's avatar

The "problem" with this point of view is that wealthy people also commit crimes. I submit Alex Murdaugh, Michael Jackson, Jeffery Epstein, Bernie Madoff and Donald Trump as examples.

And trump’s goons aren’t going to do anything to them

Trump's goons, to the very last of the them, are all criminals as well.

Successfully painting Blue-run major metro areas as crime-infested hellholes, reflects the power and sophistication of long-term conservative messaging. A nexus of RW media mis- and dis-information, and on-point daily reinforcement by GOP politicians, have convinced voters that it must be so.

The Republican "Media-Congressional Complex" has successfully persuaded voters of all stripes to disregard the evidence that Red-run states and counties have less crime. When the exact opposite is true.

This didn't start recently. These same men and their proteges have been fine tuning this and adapting to changes in technology for 40+ years. Those of us who play fairly have seen glimpses of it, but they needed a leader, a con man, a charismatic leader in the WH. Once installed, they will never let him go, or his hand picked successor. Of course, his hand may be dead and cold, but someone from the RW will hold his little tiny finger up and say, "That one."

NubbyShober's avatar

This.

It's been a looooong term project. But voters to varying extents actually believe it. Such is the value of well-crafted propaganda. Because pretty much the entire RW emphasis on culture wars issues is propaganda. With Dems-are-soft-on-crime and Dems-are-worse-at-the-economy top of the list.

His lies are amplified by the right-wing-owned “news” sources like Sinclair that have taken control of messaging. The once-proud Baltimore Sun is now a dump of bashing of the governor and mayor.

Katy Bolger's avatar

What filth and anitAmerican garbage is being presented to this country via Sinclair, Fox and all the influencers and bros. Sometimes I see something and I need to stop and think: wait, is that real? And if that happens, it's probably a lie, and I dig (not too deep because it doesn't require it) to find the truth. I have really good filters. Most people, most people, most people do not.

Yes, crime is down in the blue cities, but these numbers are nothing like the tyrump could do if he were in charge. Why! crime would go down by 500%, 600%, 1000% if he could run those cities. The criminals would be paying you. We wouldn't need taxes at all. The crime would pay for itself, just like it does in his family and in his administration.

Thanks very much for publishing this article. Meanwhile the real crime in another sense is what Trump and the US Postal Service are currently doing to allow anyone to ship a handgun without the involvement of a licensed gun dealer. For almost 100 years this has been barred by federal law. Now Trump has issued an opinion that the statute is unconstitutional. That supports gun rights groups challenging the statute in court. On April 2, 2026, our nation’s postal service “published a proposed rule to conform with this opinion even though the Trump Administration cannot unilaterally direct the USPS to violate a federal law,” according to news from the California Attorney General’s office. Anyone being able to ship guns by mail…It’s madness!

Katy Bolger's avatar

Guns, guns, guns. We are told they are part of our lifeblood and heritage here in America, but that is simply not true. The gun lobby's origin story is bull shit and it goes on from there...

Stephen S. Power's avatar

And where is crime up? Red states. For example, you are twice as likely to be murdered in Des Moines as you are in NYC on a per capita basis.

Maybe letting every angry a-hole have a machine gun was a bad idea.

And this ought to be common knowledge; mainstream media continues to fall short.

WH called a reporter who shared an image of the President’s eyes drooping a “moron.”

Just as with Trump Mobile, the clock is running out & Trump self promotion is #Blinking.

Millions have bought, sold, worn, posted 86 47, but after 11 months of intense “investigation”, Kash & his FBI have cracked the hidden felony intent behind the photo. But the national security threat posed by its disclosure may require trial to be dispensed with & Comey summarily executed by firing squad or drone strike.

Trump lies. He can’t be trusted.

First and foremost, we need to remember that whatever Trump says is not true. Neither the Republicans in Congress nor most of the press will challenge him on this, but just keep in your heads and don't be afraid to use as an argument that, if Trump said it, it's absolutely not true.

If our friends and neighbors are consuming information from weasel news or "conservative" information sources that are agreeing with and lifting up things Trump has said, they're swallowing lies which will eventually kill them. They are slowly poisoning themselves, day by day, and need to be told that this is the case.

The same general rule holds true with all the members of the Trump regime. They absolutely don't know what they're talking about. If any of them claims anything, that claim is not true.

The sooner we keep this solidly in our minds, the sooner we can shut down or shut out those who have swallowed the "flavor aid" and believe all the lies. The time for "nice" is long past.
