It's a sorry state of affairs when you have to explain to people that the President of the United States paying hush money to a porn star to cover up his sexual relationship is a bad thing.

Not to mention being perfectly okay with a chump (Cohen) going to jail for you. The fact that Cohen already went to jail for this same crime would seem to make this prosecution a slam dunk, but apparently it is not.

Thank you Judd for lining up all the relevant points again, as I am afraid a lot of people who would love to see Trump in jail feel like this "unimportant" case is a distraction or that the feared blowback from an indictment will discourage other prosecutors to go forward on indictments in the more seemingly relevant cases.

I sure hope the prosecutors can be as succinct and persuasive when they announce it. I'm not hopeful.

Nancy Pelosi's greatest mistake was in not allowing Trump to be impeached for all of the crimes he was known to have committed by the time the Ukraine extortion came to light. He should have been hit for obstruction in the Mueller probe, emolument violations, sharing classified information with Russians, naming brainless grifters like Javanka to the WH staff, and, who knows, jaywalking. It was too easy for the Republicans to brush off the single phone call extorting Zelenskyy for dirt on Biden. It might not have been so easy to brush off Trump's whole body of dirty work. Now it's up to the justice system. No indictment too small. No charge too trivial. Trump is a career criminal. It's long past time to hold him to account. And why not start with his hush money payment to Stormy, who forever imprinted our minds with the thought of the macho Trump with naught but a tiny mushroom.

The republicans would never have impeached trump regardless of the charges. Look at the coup attempt. They needed trump to distract from their steady work toward taking over local and state government and their agenda towards fascism.

Perhaps, but as we did see with the second impeachment, not all Republicans are as MAGA as the loud mouths that dominate the media. Also consider the fact that Trump had just lost them the 2018 elections and their majority in the House. If there had been an overwhelming pile of evidence of crimes Moscow Mitch might have calculated that it was better for the party to throw Trump over the side. Pence would have continued to nominate Christo-fascist judges without all of the drama. Might not have cost him his Senate majority in 2020 even though Pence would have been cannon fodder for Biden.

As they vote, legislate, and campaign, the Republicans continue to demonstrate that they really are mostly MAGA in philosophy. Look at Pence insisting that TFG's current jeopardy is politically motivated, and not the result of crimes. When asked directly in interviews about TFG or his behaviors, Republicans deflect and defend. Even so called moderates continue to downplay Jan. 6, and are all too eager to let the loudmouths try to prove through baseless investigations that it was just a mostly peaceful tour of the capitol.

Really appreciate your capacity to go in, sort out, connect and display the many 'weeds' of stories like this.

For a lot of folks, attention falls off when they are convinced that "It's complicated."

Thanks for never being deterred by "complicated". Suddenly we have another reliable overview of another formerly "complicated" issue!

Yay!

Say this over and over for the people in the back!!! Yay indeed!

"Axelrod said charges against Trump for something so insignificant would allow Trump to characterize all future charges as "politically-motivated.""

The ruling class will not allow any of their members to be prosecuted, because that might make the little people think that their rulers are obligated to follow the law.

The law binds the ruled but does not protect it. The law also protects the rulers but does not bind them.

I was disappointed to see that Axelrod does a podcast with Karl Rove. I'm sure it's lucrative, but I don't think it makes Ax impartial.

Not sure why you'd be disappointed or even surprised. Pretty much on brand.

Kudos to you Judd for your diligence in setting the record straight on SVB and BLM donations. Thrilled to see that other outlets are recognizing your abilities and writing.

Very grateful for your left-wing writing Judd. Sounds like it will be an Interesting week.

Why is this left-wing writing.... is the truth just left-wing?

Expand full comment

I think we need a conversation on what "left" vs "right" means.

Back in high school, I was taught that it was an indicator of who controls the means of production.

I think a broader interpretation is full democracy vs authoritarianism.

So trump tells his constituents that he is going to be arrested and they and the press swallow it whole. Great fund raising pitch.

Trump called for another riot, not money.

That doesn't mean he isn't calling for "protest" - which is the word he used. He wants his followers to do what they did on Jan. 6. He doesn't care if anyone gets killed so long as he's the center of attention.

Trump is already getting free news coverage and free lawyers, and his Save America PAC has close to half a billion $ in its coffers. Of course Trump is also stumping for money. That always comes first.

Perhaps this is the gut-punch that will soften up Trump and his Supporters before the federal haymaker in coming days.

I wish Axelrod and other Dem spox/talking heads were not so dismissive and "nothin' to see here" on the Bragg indictment! They're hoping for bigger fish to take DJT down; yes, this is perhaps not the MOST significant crime he's committed, but for all Americans sake, don't just put it in the rearview mirror as a non-issue! It IS an issue, and Trump's skated in so many ways on so many crimes that saying this one is superfluous and not a "real" indictable crime is just giving him a bigger soapbox. I say Get him on any and all charges because he'll delay, appeal, play politics with every possible thing he's liable for. He CANNOT be able to skirt ANY charges. He's gotten away with far too many crimes, small and LARGE over his years of treachery, lawlessness and privilege. I say, NO MORE. Make him liable and make him pay, however "minor'" the crime may seem. Once the dominoes start falling.....look out, Donnie!! One small step for justice, only the beginning.

I'm still in the ' they're all complicit crowd ' therefore nothing will happen to anyone ever .... sorry to be a debbie downer I've just lost all faith in our government and it's politicians . Thanks Judd for a clear picture of these events.

Good summary of this case. I was one of the people who was a little let down that this was going to be the first case to possibly get an indictment. People will not think of the campaign laws violated and think it was a payoff for the affair. Who cares about an affair will be the popular thinking. With that in their minds they are vulnerable targets for the 'political witch hunt' mantra Trump will use. And we all know Trump will exploit this to his advantage. The circus goes on.

Shame on David Axelrod for forgetting and rewriting history. We have plenty enough of that from Republicans without widely watched Dems engaging in the same behavior.

Cutting through the fog as usual, Judd and team. Thank you!

Trump is a criminal - and that should be the end of the story. Instead his crimes and misdeeds exacerbate confusion and doubt over the direction of our society. It's as if we were living inside of a crazed circus every minute of every day. I fervently hope that one day we awaken from this nightmare and begin to live as clear-minded adults.
