Hillsdale College sends mass mailings, I have read some of the complete BS they write. Certainly DeSantis changing New College into something like that seems par for the course.

From making military veterans into automatic teachers without degrees, banning books, legislating against minority groups and women, one would think Nazi Germany 1936 was the standard DeSantis and FLA conservatives are using to shape the future.

Yet. AP has a story this Monday morning how DeSantis is the golden boy for the GOP candidate presidential race in 2024.

The thinking man's candidate compared to the MAGAs and Trump? Nationally we could look into the barrel of this cannon. Geezus.

Boycott FLA economically. That's my best advice.

Good story, PI. Four Alarmer.

My late father-in-law was on the mailing list for the Hillsdale College newsletter, "Imprimis." Although he passed 7 years ago, they're still sending the newsletter. The current one is sitting on my desk right now, with the main story blaring its headline: "The Twitter Files Reveal an Existential Threat," written by a "senior editor at The Federalist." That shows you the absolute shallowness of the "thinking" that these people do. I read them when they come in, under the principle of "know they enemy."

Elsewhere, other news outlets still insist Trump is the future nominee. I think the press is simply playing horserace games. It's way too early to know who will be the nominee. I personally don't care, because I'm sure they're going to lose. Despite the GOP's extremist antics, they are still struggling to get people sold on a fascist future.

Expand full comment

They can only sell a fascist future to their hardcores...others. If they knew what was in store, would run. But so many of their softer voters don’t know, or don’t believe what anyone but Fox tells them.

This is so reprehensible it is beyond words!

The comments above are true about the educated as opposed to those with not so much having access and interest in the importance off this enormous overreach. Many would just admire DeSatan for being the big bad white fascist he is and would feel the field is leveled without the elitists being in charge.

What exactly is "reprehensible" ?

We who visit news sites and read blogs are not a majority. Most Americans are low information voters, because so many have gotten used to everything being the same for them regardless of which party is running things. I remember my 20's as a young mother to small kids, and I literally had no time or interest for politics. Now I'm on the other end of things, and I'm limited in how much of my time I care to spend on politics. I'm so fatigued by it all, and there's not much I can do about any of it, so I do my best to stay calm. Looking back the last 8 years, a lot of the stuff the "liberal" media said would happen under Trump did not happen. It felt like the story of Chicken Little. I have decided to have a little faith and trust in President Biden, and in the American people, especially the almost 8 million who voted out Trump in 2020. The news media sells fear, and we've been buying too much of it.

So I’ve read 3 paragraphs and I wonder why ppl live in Florida? Old white ppl I understand, they care about their immediate needs and nothing else...too bad the death cult are trying to end their lives quicker... I digress, young ppl, women, family’s are getting screwed. Why? I’d rather live in a ditch in a state that actually does things to help me in my ditch! Just makes it hard to get out of bed when I read the article. Back at it...🤢

I agree w everything you said and it’s hard to see what that monster and his lackeys are getting away with. I’m an old white woman, but I still work here in Florida. My job and my husband’s business would not transfer to another locale. I have children and grandchildren here and can’t imagine my life without them near but still think about giving it all up to get the hell outta here. If desantis becomes President, I fear the future we all face. It’s very difficult to immigrate to Canada. I’ve checked.

I want to be close to my family, otherwise I would retire somewhere in New England. I love seeing the seasons change, hate big cities and love peace and quiet. I couldn't live in a warm place after spending 6 years in Egypt. The heat there was just too much. I felt ill by the time 5:00 pm rolled around, I despise having to fight cockroaches and although I enjoy a good strong thunderstorm (and basically, Cairo had almost no rain and only one thunderstorm during the years I lived there), I do not enjoy hurricanes and tornadoes. NY is hardly the cheapest place, but my family is what matters to me. One of my high school friends retired to South Carolina, which has been clobbered by politics and by horrendous weather ever since they moved there.

I subscribe to Hillsdale College. They have lots of ideas. Lots and lots of them., They are against diversity, inclusion, LGBTQ persons, the dreaded CRT, fairness and all of that. They are also FOR guns, butter, money, conservatism and Jesus, not necessarily in that order.

It is quite fascinating to read the screeds and imagine the poisonous and diseased mind (s) who dream this ish up. This in an effort to "know thy enemy." These guys are Nazis for real and we are receiving our forwarning.

Adam, my father in law ( now passed) was an ultra conservative Catholic, who apparently subscribed to Hillsdale College mail. I moved from Florida, after living there 20 years, back in 2006. My husband remained there a bit longer & when his father was in nursing home,

(prior to his passing) received much of his mail. (When my husband moved to our home in Georgia after retiring, some of his father's mail was forwarded.) I saw brochures from Hillsdale & curious as I am, read them & about their ultra conservative agenda in education & politically. I found its content disturbing. Rolled my eyes, called them & told them to delete our new address in Georgia from their mailing list, as my deceased father in law never resided here. But I do understand your thinking of " know thy enemy."

I have been taking a bit of a break from some of my " political " readings of the last few weeks, at least in terms of commenting. Though, much like a bad car wreck (or train accident in Ohio;) it's hard to turn away from reading my various sub-stack feeds. So many alarming & damning events. These racist, misogynistic, bigoted, homophobic ba$tard$ & cretins are working overtime; to dumb down & desensitize the upcoming generations in Florida (for now), to so many of the differences that make us a richly diverse & multi layered culture & nation. A diversity that, if embraced & interwoven into the fabric of our unique culture, could ( I believe) be enriching to all.

Yes we can do better. Need to do better, but there were folks working towards that goal of making students & young folks aware of the richness of that diversity.

I attended UCF in Orlando, IN 1994-96, returning to complete my degree later in life. A decent school. Nice campus & certainly a diverse offering, terms of courses...then. Now these narrow minded, goose steppers want to chip away at the curriculum. Book by book, class by class, professor by professor.

"Nazis" indeed, in nicer attire; thus they blend in. My concern is they're not ALL total idiots, as they appear to have a plan/ agenda, and a strategy for implementing it. And their foot soldiers are lining up; in the form of legislators; DeSantis clones on various boards & in the form of some voters. Some are either asleep at the wheel, for various reasons as mentioned prior, or totally on board in looking to recreate portions of an America from the 1950s. An America that overall, no longer, should no longer exist. And these foot soldiers are working overtime towards their goals. Which means those opposing these draconian measures towards serious censorship & the reshaping of culture from diverse to one size fits all...if you're white & "the rest be damned", must redouble their efforts.

The ACLU is fighting some of these measures in court rooms around the country. ( Card carrying -dues paying member here..) But it takes lots of money, as these efforts to restrain freedoms pop up, like moles from the Whack a Mole game, in court rooms & capital buildings around the nation. My question is again, who's funding the other sides efforts? Someone..corporations, wealthy someone's with big agendas...is putting their foot soldiers on the path to advancing their game plan, but overall not being totally blunt about announcing how deeply involved they are; as the optics might be damning at this point still, IF you could put more faces/ names to it. So I suspect they must still fear the opposition. The angry mob at their gates, brandishing our shovels & pitchforks....infuriated at being duped & manipulated. My biggest fear is that I might not live long enough to see this mess cleaned up....to see how the story ends, for our children & grand children.

Could I suggest an alternative explanation. They don't read shit. They repeat what they are told by the pastor who tells them what to think, mostly based on the two sides of the right wing white evangelical coin - give 10% of gross to the pastor, hate those the pastor tells you are spawn of Satan. Or in the case of charlatans like Joel Osteen, Pat Robertson, Kenneth Copeland, Ken Ham, etc., the third side of the coin is "Don't wait till you die to have your pie in the sky, have it now with ice cream on top. Follow Jeezus as I do and you will be as rich as me. And don't forget to tithe"

First DeSantis came for the high schools by having his proxies replace school board members, removing books he deemed unacceptable, revoking curriculum he believes is “too woke” and threatening the college board with removal of all AP classes if they don’t bend to his wishes.

Then he came for the colleges and universities by directly replacing the trustees, enacting laws to control pieces of the curriculum, firing at least one college president and now this- the wholesale removal of entire curriculums.

To those who believe that DeSantis should be the next president, I say he is extremely dangerous. He is very disciplined, laser focused and has shown us his authoritarian skills.

This is a frantic attempt at total control by De Santis’ Nazi regime.

If I was an educator in Florida I would flee that devil- dealing governor’s state.

For him to decide text message’s , emails, are his property and being used to catch Educator’s not following his diabolical commands, well we know who he is.

If we allow these restrictions as his prerogative, we might as well throw the Constitution out completely.

Oh I know , states rights and all that.

But this is still America and to deny access to our core freedoms is not acceptable on every level.

If he continues w this BS there should be a mass exodus from Florida of educators . Im sure De Santis will find some Nazis that are willing to uphold his racist and derogatory brain storms.

But for all these systems to buckle down under this lunatic, just wrong.

I should not be flippant about this. I grew up in a blue collar area in the 1940’s . This approach to understanding any “divergence” from the norms of this community were “handled”. Suppression , regression, segregation, behavioral suffocation , and cancelation kept everyone and everything “in line”. It was a suffocating world in which we were all alike and all thought the same things. What a waste.

Just waking, scanning this information, coming for a while now from Death (to education, books, libraries, inquiry)

DeSantis. The man thinks he can dictate thought; may be in a quest for the presidency. Maybe he’s having a misogynistic mid-life crisis. He must not be allowed to ascend any further into the world of politics; he cares not about diversity. Nor people; only power. He’s a bully using his current position to take Florida back hundreds of years in inclusive academic studies. Maybe he just wants to recreate MAN IN HIS OWN IMAGE. Good grief, what an egomaniac. Let’s (the voters in Florida and the USA) not let him ascend to the throne he desperately seeks. I surmise the Christian right supports him or do they? He’s cruel; just seeking a bigger bullhorn from which to preach his insanity.
